Chapter 6

The passport paperwork was incomplete.

That distinction prevented prosecutors from exaggerating the case.

No valid passport application for the unborn child had been submitted.

No passport had been issued.

No foreign birth registration existed.

The baby did not legally exist as a separate person yet.

What investigators found was preparation.

Draft applications.

Blank notarization pages.

Consular appointment requests.

Passport-photo specifications.

Instructions from a private documentation service.

And one fabricated statement supposedly from Celeste.

I consent to my child traveling internationally in the care of Marina Ravello if I am medically unable to accompany him.

Signature:

Celeste Ravello.

Forensic comparison showed the signature image had been copied from the emergency-care acknowledgment Celeste genuinely signed.

The same extracted image appeared across four separate drafts.

Helena’s computer had created the image file.

Marina’s computer had opened it.

That mattered.

Then came another layer.

Celeste’s scheduled delivery was not an ordinary induction.

Her obstetrician planned a C-section at thirty-nine weeks because of placenta previa that had improved but not fully resolved and because the baby remained in a difficult position.

The plan could still change.

But Helena knew Celeste might undergo surgery.

Recovery.

Pain medication.

Possible separation from the baby for monitoring.

That timing appeared in her notes.

C-section window gives Marina hospital role if D unavailable.

D.

Damian.

Why would Damian be unavailable?

Investigators found a meeting invitation.

Scheduled the morning after the C-section.

Location:

Montreal.

Purpose:

Private settlement conference involving a legitimate Ravello hotel dispute.

Damian had declined twice.

Helena repeatedly insisted he attend personally.

Her message:

You can fly up after delivery and be back the same night. This affects thirty million dollars in property.

Damian had finally agreed in principle.

Celeste objected.

He told her:

“If you need me, I don’t go.”

Helena did not know that part.

Then the Canadian law firm supposedly demanding Damian’s physical presence gave detectives an unexpected answer.

“We never required him to attend.”

The meeting could occur by video.

Helena had been the one pressing for travel.

The pattern sharpened.

Celeste in postoperative recovery.

Damian out of the country for several hours.

Marina already named in fabricated caregiver documents.

Private flight reservation waiting.

That still did not mean the plan could succeed.

Hospitals verify parents.

Airlines verify travel documents.

Government agencies verify passport applications.

But Helena’s strategy did not depend on every institution failing forever.

Only enough confusion, prestige, and paperwork to create momentum.

Then Damian found one more document in his mother’s notes.

If C objects after, remind D she signed.

Not:

Show the court.

Not:

File petition.

Remind Damian.

The forgery was designed first to manipulate the family member most likely to believe familiar handwriting before calling a forensic examiner.

Damian.

Helena knew her son.

She had counted on him doubting Celeste for just long enough.
