Chapter 4

The baby-shower videos made Sabina’s physical conduct difficult to dispute.

Three guests captured the argument before the shove.

Jessamine stood beside the gift table holding a folded paper.

Later identified as another copy of the postpartum support plan.

She said:

“I told you no.”

Sabina answered:

“You won’t be in any condition to decide.”

Jessamine:

“Then Callan decides. Not you.”

Sabina:

“Callan knows what this family needs.”

Jessamine laughed once.

“Callan knows what his wife needs.”

Sabina stepped closer.

Then came the sentence several guests heard clearly.

“You are carrying the Fenmore granddaughter. Do not confuse that with being important.”

Jessamine replied:

“She is my daughter before she is your granddaughter.”

Sabina shoved her.

Hard enough to send Jessamine backward into the table.

No accident.

No stumble.

No ambiguous shoulder bump.

Then Callan arrived.

Helped Jessamine upright.

Heard the baby-taking threat.

Sabina called Jessamine a womb.

And Callan threw the cake.

Police reviewed that separately.

The cake was large enough to knock Sabina off balance when it struck her face and upper body.

No broken bones.

A bruised hip.

A strained wrist.

Sabina demanded Callan be charged.

The prosecutor made no immediate decision.

Fine.

Callan had already admitted what he did.

Then Michael obtained messages between Sabina and the maternity concierge.

Sabina:

Document any emotional escalation. She has been unusually reactive.

Celeste:

Pregnancy irritability isn’t incapacity.

Sabina:

I didn’t say incapacity. I said document.

Another:

Sabina:

If she becomes difficult at delivery, I need the hospital to understand there is a safe family option.

Celeste:

Parents retain newborn custody unless a legal intervention says otherwise.

Sabina:

Obviously.

Again:

She had been warned.

Then Celeste disclosed that Sabina repeatedly asked whether a hospital could delay newborn discharge if staff believed the mother was emotionally unstable.

Celeste told her:

Only legitimate safety concerns and medical or legal process mattered.

Sabina asked:

“What if concerns are documented before delivery?”

That question was harder to explain as grandmotherly enthusiasm.

Then Michael examined the guest list.

Among ordinary relatives and friends were two people Jessamine barely knew.

A family-law attorney.

And a licensed clinical social worker who sometimes consulted for Fenmore elder-care properties.

Neither had been invited by Jessamine.

Sabina called them “family friends.”

The social worker’s statement was immediate.

“Sabina asked me to observe Jessamine casually because she believed pregnancy stress was affecting her.”

“Did you agree to evaluate her?”

“No.”

“Did Jessamine consent?”

“No.”

“Did you observe anything concerning?”

“No.”

“Did you report that?”

“Yes.”

The email existed.

Jessamine appears appropriately engaged, oriented, affectionate with guests, and understandably irritated by intrusive family questions. No basis for clinical concern.

Sabina received it two hours before the shove.

She attacked Jessamine anyway.
