Chapter 9

Sabina’s office was searched under civil discovery and later through criminal process where authorized.

Investigators found two postpartum folders.

The first was labeled:

FAMILY RECOVERY.

It contained:

Private nurse schedules.

Driver arrangements.

Meal plans.

A prepared nursery inventory.

A visitor calendar.

The fourteen-day parental delegation form.

And a typed agenda for Callan.

Day one:

Hospital.

Day two:

Rest.

Day three:

Estate counsel / family release.

Day four:

Aurelia lender confirmation.

Jessamine stared at the sequence.

The second folder was labeled:

CONTINGENCY.

It was more disturbing.

It contained copies of Jessamine’s insomnia messages.

Notes about the panic attack after the car accident.

A list of witnesses who had seen her become angry with Sabina.

Draft language for an emergency family-law consultation if Jessamine refused Sabina’s postpartum involvement.

And a memo:

If hospital has safety concerns, propose Sabina residence as immediate stable placement while parents resolve conflict.

Again, Sabina could not simply order a hospital to give her the baby.

The packet did not create legal authority.

But it showed what she hoped to do with any moment of uncertainty.

Then investigators found a message to the maternity concierge.

Sabina:

I do not need permanent anything. I need forty-eight calm hours.

Celeste:

Forty-eight hours for what?

No answer.

Another message to her assistant:

Notary must stay flexible around delivery. Keep him available for three days.

Another:

If Callan refuses to leave hospital, bring papers there.

The assistant replied:

Estate papers?

Sabina:

All papers.

Then came a communication with Aurelia’s lender.

Not incriminating by itself.

Sabina wrote:

Family settlement expected during week of October 19. I should have heir release no later than October 22.

The lender replied:

We will not rely on an anticipated release. Send executed documents through counsel.

October 22.

Three days after Jessamine’s due date.

Michael laid the timelines together.

Jessamine looked at him.

“She scheduled my postpartum period like a closing room.”

Nobody answered.

Then the forensic team found one last note in Sabina’s handwriting.

If J cooperates, easy. If J refuses, Callan chooses child over paper until she calms down. Then offer solution.

Callan stared.

“What solution?”

The next page contained the answer.

Baby with family. Callan signs. Everybody goes home.

Michael read it twice.

Then looked up.

May you like

The case was no longer about an overbearing grandmother with a grotesque idea of postpartum help.

Sabina had designed a transaction around the assumption that her son would sign anything if she could make him believe family access to his newborn depended on it.
