Chapter 3

Mabel improved by morning.

Her fever dropped below 101.

She ate half a banana.

Then demanded crackers.

Fabio considered that the best financial indicator he had seen in twenty-four hours.

Juliet stayed with her.

Fabio met Adrian in a hospital conference room.

They watched the estate security footage.

Fabio did not control the system directly.

A third-party security provider did.

Good.

That made preservation easier to trust.

Dinner footage showed everything.

Juliet checking Mabel’s temperature.

Juliet standing.

Constance taking the keys.

Fabio rising.

The confrontation.

The slap.

No missing seconds.

No convenient camera failure.

Then Adrian rewound forty minutes.

“Look.”

Constance was in the west hall speaking with her personal aide.

No audio.

Then she pointed toward two security cameras.

Five minutes later, the aide walked to the security office.

“What happened?” Fabio asked.

“We requested the access logs.”

The security manager had received an instruction from Constance at 6:28 p.m.

Retain all dining-room and west-hall footage tonight. No routine overwrite.

Fabio stared.

“Why?”

“Official reason was a jewelry-security concern.”

“Was there one?”

“No reported issue.”

Adrian advanced the timeline.

At 6:41, Constance told the head of household staff that nobody should leave the formal dinner before her closing toast unless there was “a true emergency.”

At 6:50, Juliet brought Mabel downstairs because Constance insisted the child appear for the family photograph.

Mabel already looked tired.

At 7:02, a nanny checked her temperature.

102.4.

The nanny texted Juliet.

Then something important happened.

Constance spoke privately with the nanny.

The nanny later gave a statement.

“What did she say?” Fabio asked.

Adrian read it.

“Mrs. DeSantis asked whether Mabel was in immediate danger.”

“The nanny isn’t a doctor.”

“She said that.”

“And?”

“Constance told her, ‘Then stop frightening everyone. Juliet will use this to drag Fabio out before the trust dinner is finished.’”

Fabio’s eyes hardened.

The trust dinner.

Not family dinner.

That was how Constance saw it.

Tonight’s guests included:

Three family beneficiaries.

Two trust advisers.

Fabio’s CFO.

Constance’s accountant.

Two longtime family attorneys.

And several relatives whose statements would carry weight if a family governance dispute erupted.

Adrian said:

“She wanted witnesses.”

Fabio looked at the camera footage.

“Or she wanted dinner.”

“Maybe.”

Fabio gave him a look.

Adrian shrugged.

“You pay me to stop you from turning suspicion into evidence.”

Fair.

Then Adrian placed another document on the table.

Constance had retained a crisis-management consultant seventeen days earlier.

Engagement description:

Family governance instability / executive volatility scenario.

Fabio stared at the words.

His mother had been preparing for his instability before he struck her.
