Chapter 21 - Margaret Moves Back—Partly

Once safety arrangements were in place, Margaret returned to Bellafonte.

Not full time.

She kept her city apartment.

She liked it.

At Bellafonte she retained the east-wing residence reserved under the ground lease.

Vanessa’s lawyers had once suggested the suite was a courtesy.

Helen produced the lease.

Section 14.3.

Reserved occupancy right.

Access to common areas subject to ordinary event security and safety rules.

No one could simply throw Margaret out because she argued with management.

Still, Mom made a choice.

She stayed there only two nights a week.

“Why?”

“Because I discovered room service delivers better in Manhattan.”

I knew there was more.

Bellafonte had become too entangled with identity.

Landlord.

Mother.

Founder’s widow.

Matriarch.

She wanted places where she was simply Margaret.

Her apartment gave that.

She also began using a professional driver rather than relying on Bellafonte staff.

Independence.

Not retreat.

At the first event she attended after returning, the new interim manager personally asked:

“Where would you like to sit?”

Margaret answered:

“Wherever the host put me.”

No special throne.

No humiliation.

Normal event protocol.

That was what she had wanted all along.

Not supremacy.

Recognition that age did not erase agency.
