Chapter 24 - Dante and Margaret

My mother and I fought after everything settled.

Not about Vanessa.

About me.

“You stopped telling me things,” I said.

“I told my lawyer.”

“I am your son.”

“You keep saying that like it is a corporate office.”

We were eating pasta in her apartment.

No security inside.

No lawyers.

Just us.

“I could have helped.”

“You could have.”

“Then why didn’t you let me?”

She put down her fork.

“Because you have made helping you part of loving you.”

I stared.

She continued.

“When your father died, you handled everything.”

“Someone had to.”

“You handled my bank appointments.”

“You asked.”

“My driver.”

“You needed one.”

“My doctors.”

“Mom.”

“My repairs.”

I leaned back.

“You are complaining I help too much.”

“I am saying I sometimes let you because it is easier than arguing.”

That sounded uncomfortably familiar.

Vanessa.

Me.

Different behavior.

Same pressure.

“I don’t kick your cane.”

“No.”

“I don’t humiliate you.”

“No.”

“Then do not compare.”

“I am not comparing harm. I am comparing the habit of deciding what I need before asking.”

That landed.

My mother had wanted to fight her own lease dispute.

She had a right.

My role was not to take over because I could.

So we changed.

She sent me medical updates she wanted me to have.

Not everything.

I stopped calling her driver to verify appointments.

I stopped reading every real-estate draft unless she asked.

Protection became available rather than automatic.

That was harder than violence.

Violence takes one second.

Restraint has a calendar.
