Chapter 14

Elena named her daughter Claire.
Victor wanted to be at the hospital.
Elena permitted him.
Then immediately established rules.
“No security guys inside the maternity floor.”
“They’re professionals.”
“No.”
“One in the lobby.”
“Dad.”
Victor sighed.
“One in the parking lot.”
Elena stared at him.
He smiled.
“Worth trying.”
Claire was born healthy.
Victor cried so openly that Elena threatened to photograph him.
“You do and you’re out of the will.”
“You don’t control my phone.”
“Unfortunately.”
Their relationship changed after the Carter case.
Victor remained protective.
Elena became less willing to confuse protection with obedience.
When Claire was six months old, Victor offered Elena an executive role at Moretti Freight.
“Come work for people who won’t frame you.”
Elena laughed.
“That is a very low hiring standard.”
“I pay well too.”
“No.”
“You need something to do.”
“I have something to do.”
“What?”
“Build my own career.”
Victor looked offended for approximately ten seconds.
Then proud.
Elena joined a midsize forensic-accounting firm specializing in employee-benefit investigations and corporate governance.
She did not hide her history.
She also did not build a brand around being a victim.
Carter Components appeared in professional training materials without her name.
She preferred that.
When Claire was two, Victor finally asked:
“Do you hate Ethan?”
Elena thought.
“No.”
“That disappoints me.”
“I know.”
“What do you feel?”
“Nothing useful.”
Victor nodded.
He understood.
Hatred kept people inside relationships differently than love did.
Elena wanted neither.
Margaret remained outside Claire’s life.
Ethan remained outside it as well.
Elena did not send photographs.
Did not accept birthday gifts.
Did not use Claire to punish them either.
Court orders and lawyers handled what needed handling.
The only Carter relative who continued reaching out was Robert.
One letter each year.
No excuses.
No demand for forgiveness.
Just accountability.
Elena stored every letter unopened.

At first because she was angry.
Later because she did not know what she wanted them to become.
