Chapter 3

Elena did not tell Victor.

That became difficult to explain later.

At the time, it felt simple.

Victor had warned her about mixing family and business.

If she called him after the first bruise, Elena imagined exactly what he would say.

Come home.

Leave Ethan.

Quit Carter Components.

Let my attorneys handle everything.

She was not ready.

She wanted Ethan to choose her without Victor forcing the choice.

So she waited.

The abuse remained intermittent.

Margaret squeezed her arm.

Shoved her shoulder during an argument.

Once threw a drinking glass against a wall beside her.

Ethan minimized each incident.

“She’s under pressure.”

“She grew up differently.”

“She would never intentionally hurt the baby.”

That sentence frightened Elena.

She had not asked whether Margaret would.

Meanwhile, the retirement-plan problem grew.

Elena obtained trustee records.

The numbers were worse than late processing.

Over ten months, Carter Components withheld roughly $2.1 million in employee retirement contributions.

Most eventually reached the plan.

But deposits were repeatedly delayed while Carter Components struggled with operating cash.

At one point more than $600,000 remained outstanding far longer than normal payroll processing could explain.

Elena confronted Ethan.

“You used the deferrals.”

“No.”

“The operating account was negative the same week the retirement transfer failed.”

“Coincidence.”

“Then show me the cash ledger.”

“You report to me.”

“I report to the company.”

“You’re my wife.”

“I know.”

Ethan slammed his hand against the desk.

“You think being Victor Moretti’s daughter means nobody can tell you when to stop?”

There it was again.

Her father.

Always her father whenever Elena said no.

She went to Robert.

“Did Ethan authorize delayed transfers?”

Robert stared at his computer.

“I need to finish the reconciliation.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“I know.”

“Did Margaret know?”

Robert whispered:

“Elena, take your maternity leave.”

Her blood went cold.

“Why?”

He finally looked at her.

“Because you don’t want to be inside this when it breaks.”

Elena answered:

“I’m already inside it.”

Robert said nothing.

Two days later Elena received a calendar invitation.

Benefits Committee Year-End Certification

She had never served on the benefits committee.

She asked Ethan.

“Why am I listed?”

“Administrative cleanup.”

“I’m not signing anything.”

“It’s routine.”

“Then Robert can sign.”

Ethan smiled strangely.

“Robert’s role changed.”

Nobody had told Elena.

That became the first clue that the Carter family was doing more than hiding delayed retirement contributions.

Someone was changing who appeared responsible for them.
