Chapter 6

The dinner began quietly.
Too quietly.
Margaret cooked.
Football played in the living room.
Ethan poured himself a drink.
Robert barely ate.
After dinner Margaret brought out a leather folder.
Elena looked at Robert.
He looked away.
Ethan slid the papers toward her.
“Sign these and we can put work away until after the baby.”
Elena opened the packet.
Benefits committee appointment.
Plan-administration acknowledgment.
Minutes stating Elena had approved delayed remittances during processor conversion.
Certification that all delays were undertaken under her supervision.
She closed it.
“No.”
Ethan sighed.
“Elena.”
“No.”
“This doesn’t say you did anything wrong.”
“It says I did things I didn’t do.”
“It formalizes your role.”
“I never had that role.”
Margaret said:
“You were finance director.”
“That is not the same thing.”
“You handled money.”
“Not plan remittance decisions.”
Ethan leaned forward.
“We are talking about technical language.”
“No. We’re talking about employees’ retirement contributions.”
Robert whispered:
“She’s right.”
Margaret glared at him.
Ethan ignored him.
“Elena, sign the documents.”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“Tomorrow I contact the plan trustee and outside counsel formally.”
Margaret stood.
“You will not.”
“I already hired counsel.”
That was the moment the dinner changed.
Margaret knocked the folder from the table.
A plate fell.
Elena stepped backward.
Margaret swept another plate onto the floor.
Ethan did nothing.
Elena said:
“I’m leaving.”
Margaret grabbed the rolling pin from the counter.
“You disrespect me, you pay for it!”
What happened next was later reconstructed from Robert’s testimony, Elena’s phone audio, and photographs of the kitchen.
Margaret shoved Elena.
Elena fell.
The rolling pin struck her shoulder and upper back.
One blow glanced against her side.
Then Margaret stood over her.
Ethan entered from the adjoining room after hearing the crash.
Elena reached toward him.
“Ethan… please take me to the hospital.”
He looked down.
He knew she was thirty-one weeks pregnant.
He knew Margaret had just hit her.
He answered:
“Maybe you should’ve thought about the consequences before disrespecting my mother.”
Then he returned to the football game.
Robert followed him.
That later became the part Robert could barely describe.
“I went with Ethan.”
Detective Julia asked:
“Why?”
Robert cried.
“I don’t know.”
“You left a pregnant woman on the floor.”
“Yes.”
“You saw Margaret holding the rolling pin.”
“Yes.”
“You saw the broken dishes.”
“Yes.”
“And you sat down?”
“Yes.”
Elena dragged herself toward the back door.
Then collapsed.
She called Victor.
Margaret believed that call would bring a dangerous man who would make everything worse.

Instead it brought the one thing the Carter family had spent months avoiding.
Outside witnesses.
