Chapter 1 - the broken champagne glass

The grand ballroom of the Ravello estate shone with the warm, golden glow of massive crystal chandeliers. High-society elite, crooked politicians, and senior syndicate bosses moved across the polished marble floor in tailored suits and silk gowns. Standing near the head of the main table, looking over his empire with frightening calm, was Dominic Ravello. Broad-shouldered, battle-hardened, and impeccably dressed in a custom black tuxedo with a gold luxury wristwatch, his presence alone commanded instant, breathless silence whenever he moved through the room.
Near the head table, twenty-nine-year-old Elise Carter moved with quiet, modest grace. Dressed in a classic black-and-white maid uniform with a neat white apron and flats, she kept her eyes lowered, carefully clearing silver trays and crystal glassware.
As she leaned over to clear a side plate, her hand brushed against a fresh champagne glass, accidentally placing it right beside Dominic's empty leather chair.
Standing two feet away was Marcella Ravello, Dominic’s glamorous forty-two-year-old sister-in-law. Dressed in a luxurious burgundy evening gown that clung to her silhouette, Marcella’s diamond earrings flashed under the light. Her eyes fixed on Elise with pure, unprovoked viciousness.
Without a second of hesitation, Marcella reached out, her manicured fingers clamping hard around Elise's wrist.
Before the quiet maid could even pull back, Marcella delivered a brutal, painful slap directly across Elise’s face. The crack echoed sharply through the immediate section of the ballroom.
The force of the strike snapped Elise’s head sideways. Red liquid ran from the corner of her mouth, and a dark, angry bruise instantly began forming across her fair, rosy cheek.
Marcella smirked maliciously, glaring down at her. "Get out of here, you filthy little pauper!"
Gasps rippled softly through the nearby guests. Elise stood frozen, holding her throbbing cheek with a trembling hand, her eyes filled with shock.
The heavy double doors at the front of the ballroom swung open. Dominic Ravello entered the room. His dark eyes swept the hall and locked immediately onto Elise holding her bruised face. He didn't utter a word. His broad chest rose as he walked straight toward Marcella, his polished leather shoes striking the marble floor with deliberate, terrifying focus.
The entire room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
Before Dominic reached Marcella, the Ravello family lawyer—a fifty-eight-year-old man in a dark formal suit—hurried out from the corridor. He held a thick, sealed laboratory envelope in his hands.
The lawyer stepped in front of Dominic, his expression deeply serious. "The second test confirmed it."
Marcella’s eyes widened in sudden, panic-stricken horror. She lunged forward with frantic speed, reaching out her manicured hands to snatch the sealed envelope from the lawyer's fingers.
Dominic moved like a dark wave. He easily blocked Marcella’s path with his broad arm, lifted his heavy hand, and delivered a hard, open-handed slap across Marcella's face.
The blow sent Marcella spinning sideways. Her heels caught on her gown hem as she crashed violently into the banquet table, sending platters, silver ice buckets, and dozens of crystal wine glasses breaking and scattering across the floorboards. Dark red wine and broken glass splashed everywhere, completely soaking the front of Marcella’s expensive burgundy dress.
Dominic didn't even glance down at her. He broke the red wax seal on the laboratory envelope and pulled out the white document inside.
Marcella slowly pushed herself up from the shattered glass on the floor, soaked and disheveled, her eyes burning with a low, threatening terror.
Marcella whispered in a low, threatening voice: "Read that result, and your family will change forever."
Dominic’s eyes scanned the official laboratory paper. His hardened expression turned into an ice-cold, unshakeable stillness. He slowly shifted his gaze away from the document, turning his head to look directly at Elise, who was still standing by the table clutching her bruised cheek.
Dominic spoke in an ice-cold tone: "99.99 percent match. How long have you been hiding this truth?"

Elise froze in total shock, her breath catching in her throat.
Behind them, Marcella backed away step by step, her face drained of all color as pure terror consumed her eyes.
