Chapter 8 - the mother's secret

Three weeks later, the morning sun rose bright and clear over Lake Michigan, painting the calm water in brilliant shades of blue and gold.
The Ravello estate had been completely transformed. The dark, fearful atmosphere that had hung over the property for years was gone, replaced by open windows, blooming garden flowers, and the soft music of peace.
In the sunlit conservatory behind the main house, Elise sat at a wide glass table reviewing architectural plans for the new Elise Ravello Foundation. She wore a simple yellow summer dress, her skin healthy and glowing, the bruise on her cheek long gone.
Dominic walked into the room carrying two cups of fresh espresso. He wore a dark blue linen shirt with the sleeves unbuttoned at his wrists, looking more relaxed than his crew had ever seen him.
He set a cup down beside her and took a seat across the table. "You look at peace, Elise."
"I am," Elise smiled, taking a sip of coffee. "For twenty-nine years, I felt like a ghost without an identity. Now... I know who I am."
"Your father would be proud of you," Dominic said gently, stroking her hand.
Suddenly, Marcus walked into the conservatory holding a sealed white envelope delivered by a private courier from Switzerland.
"Boss," Marcus said, his voice unusually quiet. "This just arrived from the private clinic in Geneva."
Dominic took the envelope, breaking the silver wax seal. Inside was a single photograph and a brief handwritten note signed by a chief medical doctor.
Dominic read the note, his jaw instantly setting like iron as his dark eyes locked onto the photograph inside.
Elise noticed the sudden shift in his posture. "Dominic? What is it?"
Dominic slowly handed the photograph across the table to her.
Elise looked down at the image. It showed an elegant, older woman with soft brown hair sitting in a wheelchair on a sunlit terrace in Geneva, holding a small wooden chess piece in her hands.
"Your mother didn't die twenty-nine years ago, Elise," Dominic whispered softly, his voice trembling with a rare, deep emotion. "Marcella had her placed in a medically induced coma in Switzerland to keep her from revealing the truth."

Elise gasped, tears bursting from her eyes as she stared at her mother's living face. "She's... she's alive?"
"She woke up three days ago," Dominic said, standing up from his chair. "Get your coat, Elise. We're going to Switzerland."
