Chapter 22 - Sawyer’s Bedroom

We did not restore Sawyer’s room exactly.
At first I tried.
Every object back where it had been.
Same shelves.
Same layout.
Same bedding.
Sawyer stopped me.
“Desk here.”
He wanted changes.
I realized I had been treating the old arrangement like a crime scene that needed reversal.
He did not.
He wanted a dinosaur mural.
Caleb said:
“No wall mural.”
I said:
“Yes wall mural.”
Marriage healed enough for stupid arguments.
We compromised on removable decals.
Sawyer chose where boxes went.
Some toys stayed boxed.
“Donate.”
“Sure?”
“Yes.”
No symbolic hoarding because belongings were once threatened.
He outgrew things.
Healthy.
Dino received professional sewing.
I expected Sawyer to demand the note stay inside.
He said:
“No.”
We put Caleb’s original note in a family file.
Not shrine.
Evidence and memory.
Dino’s belly closed.
Nothing hidden.
That mattered to me more than Sawyer.
He just wanted the stuffing to stop leaking.
Again:
children reduce symbols to function.
May you like
Useful.
