Chapter 26 - The Dinosaur

The most important object in the story finally broke again.
Dino’s leg seam opened.
Sawyer was eight.
He brought it to Caleb.
“Fix.”
Caleb laughed.
“You’re old enough to retire him.”
Sawyer looked offended.
“Fix.”
Correct.
Caleb took out sewing kit.
I watched from kitchen.
Three years earlier, the same ritual had created the hidden note.
Caleb opened stuffing slightly.
Sawyer said:
“Put paper?”
Caleb looked at me.
“What paper?”
“Like secret.”
I waited.
Caleb asked:
“What should it say?”
Sawyer thought.
Then wrote himself:
SAWYER’S DINO. ASK BEFORE TAKING.
Capital letters.
He folded it.
Put it inside.
I almost cried at the symbolism.
Then Sawyer added:
“So if Mason takes, he knows.”
Less poetic.
Better.
Caleb sewed the seam.
The note did not say:
Never leave Sawyer alone with Imogen.
No warning.
No emergency.
Just:
Ask.
A boundary simple enough for a child to understand.
That was the climax.
Not court.
Not Imogen’s punishment.
A toy holding a new kind of message.

One based on consent, not fear.
