Chapter 1 - The Lost Tooth at Midnight

The grand ballroom of the Carbone estate was a palace of polished marble, glittering Baccarat chandeliers, and cascading white floral arrangements. Hundreds of high-society figures, corrupt politicians, and syndicate lieutenants milled through the hall, celebrating the seventh birthday of Maisie Carbone. The air smelled of expensive French champagne and roasted cedar.
At the edge of the grand gift table stood Veronica Carbone. At forty years old, Dominic’s sister-in-law was the picture of aristocratic coldness. She wore a tailored crimson evening gown, diamond chandelier earrings, and a matching diamond bracelet that caught the warm light with every subtle movement. Her fair, rosy cheeks were taut with an artificial smile, but her icy blue eyes burned with bitter resentment.
Beside her, leaning over a pile of silk-wrapped present boxes, was seven-year-old Maisie. The little girl was pure innocence amidst a den of predators, wearing an elegant pale-pink party dress, a satin ribbon in her dark curls, and pink leather flats. Her fair, rosy skin glowed under the party lights.
When no guests were looking, Veronica’s smile evaporated. She grabbed Maisie roughly by her slender upper arm, yanking the child toward the shadows behind the towering birthday cake.
"You don't belong in this family, you little parasite," Veronica hissed under her breath.
Before Maisie could cry out, Veronica brought her hand back and delivered one brutal, open-handed slap across the child's cheek. The force of the strike knocked Maisie off her feet. She crashed hard against the edge of the gift table, tumbling onto the thick velvet carpet. A tiny white baby tooth, loosened by the impact, bounced off the wood and landed softly on the dark rug.
Veronica looked down at the sobbing child, her lips curling into a vicious smirk. "Maybe now you’ll stop pretending you belong here."
The heavy double oak doors of the ballroom swung open.
Dominic Carbone stepped into the hall. At fifty-two, the legendary Mafia Boss commanded the room without saying a word. Muscular, rugged, battle-hardened, and deeply masculine, Dominic radiated an aura of unyielding authority. He wore a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, gold cufflinks, a luxury wristwatch, and polished leather shoes. Every eye in the room turned toward him in silent deference.
Dominic’s sharp eyes scanned the hall, locking instantly onto his daughter crying beside the gift table. He saw the tiny tooth lying on the velvet carpet.
His expression didn't change, but the temperature in the room dropped ten degrees into pure, liquid ice. Dominic crossed the ballroom in four long, deliberate strides. He didn't speak. He reached down, swept Maisie up into his left arm, and pulled her safely behind his broad, towering frame.
Maisie, trembling against her father's tuxedo lapel, reached beneath the drape of the gift table. Her small hand pulled out a sealed white envelope bearing the seal of a private DNA laboratory—an envelope Veronica had tried to conceal beneath the tablecloth moments earlier.
"Daddy..." Maisie whimpered, her voice shaking as tears left clean streaks on her fair cheeks. "She said this proves I'm not yours."
Dominic’s jaw set like iron. He took the envelope from his daughter's hand. Then, without taking his eyes off Veronica, he walked straight toward his sister-in-law.
Veronica forced a haughty sneer onto her face. "Dominic, don't be ridiculous—"
CRACK!
Dominic brought his broad right palm across Veronica's face with terrifying power. The slap echoed like a rifle shot across the cavernous room. The sheer force spun Veronica completely sideways, sending her crashing into a padded velvet banquet chair, her diamond earrings clicking loudly against the wood.
Gasps reverberated through the hall. Guests froze in sheer horror.
Dominic tore open the sealed DNA report. He pulled out the official laboratory pages, his dark eyes scanning the text.
Veronica slowly pushed herself up from the chair, holding her swollen, fair cheek. A bitter, venomous smile touched her lips. "Read the mother’s name before you celebrate, Dominic."
Dominic looked down at the third line of the medical document. His eyes narrowed into razor slits, his breathing locking in his chest.
May you like
"Her mother was your sister?" Dominic asked, his voice ice-cold.
Veronica’s artificial smile instantly vanished, her fair skin draining of all color as she stared at the Don in absolute, naked terror.
