Chapter 5 - The Midnight Breach

The subterranean elevator opened into a fortified stone bunker forty feet beneath the estate. The room was equipped with independent atmospheric generators, private satellite communications, and an armory of heavy tactical gear.
Dominic set Maisie down gently on a leather couch, wrapping her in a warm cashmere blanket. He handed her a glass of warm milk from the bunker’s kitchenette.
"Stay here with Frank, Maisie," Dominic said softly, smoothing down her hair. "Daddy has to clear the house."
"Don't leave me, Daddy," Maisie pleaded, her wide brown eyes full of tears.
Dominic leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss against her forehead. "Nobody gets through that steel door, sweetheart. I'll be back in ten minutes."
Dominic stepped out of the bunker, locking the heavy blast doors from the outside.
He ascended the stone stairs back to the main foyer, his heavy leather shoes silent against the granite steps. His black tuxedo was spotless, his gold cufflinks glinting under the red emergency lights, his posture radiating an aura of absolute, terrifying authority.
In the main foyer, four tactical breachers dressed in black body armor were advancing toward the study, their assault rifles raised.
Leading them was a tall man in a dark trench coat wearing a silver Venetian mask that completely obscured his face.
"Dominic!" the masked man called out, his voice distorted through a scrambler. "Hand over the child and the Vance journal! The Syndicate Council has declared your reign over!"
Dominic walked out onto the grand marble balcony overlooking the foyer. He didn't take cover. He stood tall in the crimson light, looking down at the intruders like an invincible king.
"You brought four men to my house, imposter?" Dominic said, his deep voice echoing off the high ceilings. "You should have brought a regiment."
Dominic raised his heavy sidearm, firing three rapid shots. Two of the breachers collapsed to the marble floor before they could even raise their weapons.
The third breacher lunged behind a marble pillar, firing a spray of automatic rounds that shattered a crystal chandelier overhead. Dominic leaned out and fired a single precise shot through the pillar's edge, neutralizing the attacker instantly.
The masked man didn't run. He pulled a heavy sidearm from his coat, aiming it directly at Dominic's chest.
"You think you're untouchable, Carbone?" the masked man sneered. "Veronica already sent the digital copy of the DNA report to the Chicago Council. By sunrise, your assets are frozen."
Dominic stepped down the grand marble staircase, his eyes locked onto the masked man. "Veronica sent a forged page, imposter. The true report is in my hand."
In a flash of speed, Dominic lunged forward, grabbing the masked man's wrist, twisting it back until the weapon clattered onto the floor. Dominic slammed his broad palm into the man's chest, throwing him back against the marble wall, and ripped the silver mask from his face.

Dominic’s eyes widened in sudden, dangerous shock.
Beneath the mask was Julian Vance—Veronica’s younger brother, who had allegedly died seven years ago in Chicago!
