Chapter 10

Veronica did not make Sofia disappear primarily to silence her.

She made Sofia disappear so Sofia could become the thief.

That was the major twist.

Killing Sofia would have created a homicide investigation.

Allowing Sofia to remain present would have allowed her to expose the restricted-fund transfers.

But a missing executive?

A finance-trained executive whose credentials appeared on questionable approvals?

A woman who vanished while an internal loss was being examined?

That created a completely different story.

Veronica intended to turn the foundation’s own wrongdoing into an insured employee-theft event.

The first clue had been the commercial crime insurance notice naming Sofia.

The second was the claim package drafted before she vanished.

The third was the restitution agreement waiting for Sofia’s signature.

The fourth was the North Pines “document facilitation.”

And the fifth was Veronica’s message:

She only has to sign enough of it that nobody can call it ours.

The scheme depended on absence.

Sofia’s disappearance made suspicion plausible.

Her phone and car near the lake created ambiguity.

Had she died?

Run?

Panicked?

Fled after stealing?

Veronica did not need one explanation immediately.

She needed Sofia unavailable.

While Sofia was missing, Veronica could tell the insurer:

The executive responsible for the transfers cannot be interviewed.

Tell the board:

We discovered what Sofia did too late.

Tell donors:

The foundation was victimized.

Tell regulators:

Management identified the problem and is cooperating.

Then, once enough financial restoration occurred, Sofia could reappear privately.

Not necessarily back in Dominic’s life.

Veronica planned to force her into signing a negotiated resignation and loss acknowledgment.

The foundation would pursue insurance reimbursement.

Other Bellaforte assets could refill whatever insurance did not cover.

Veronica would describe the restricted-fund transfers as Sofia’s misconduct.

Her own related-party spending would disappear inside a larger “employee theft” narrative.

Sofia had refused.

That was why North Pines printed document after document.

Why she remained confined.

Why she was taken to urgent care under another name.

Why Calvin stayed beside her.

Sofia did not need to be dead.

She needed to be isolated long enough to become legally useful.

And Rose’s birth mattered because Rose had changed Sofia’s willingness to tolerate the old Bellaforte system.

Before motherhood, Sofia had pushed for reform gradually.

After Rose, she demanded independent control immediately.

Dominic supported her.

That threatened the world Veronica had built after Marco’s death.

The gala status.

The consulting network.

The donor relationships.

The informal authority.

The ability to decide what happened because everyone assumed Veronica had earned the right.

“That child took everything from me.”

Not inheritance.

Not money Rose personally received.

Rose triggered the decision that removed Veronica’s unchecked control.

Then Sofia discovered the restricted-fund problem before Veronica could repair it quietly.

So Veronica chose a story where the reformer became the criminal.

There was one problem.

Sofia would not sign.

Then one bigger problem.

Veronica pushed a baby carriage toward a staircase and lost control of her own mouth.

“Her mother disappears.”

Dominic had spent seven weeks asking whether Sofia was dead.

Veronica answered the wrong question.

She told him there was still someone available to disappear.
