Chapter 9

The insurer turned over its claim file.

That changed the investigation.

Veronica had not merely submitted preliminary notice after Sofia disappeared.

She had assembled a full draft claim package beforehand.

Loss amount:

$3.82 million.

Cause:

Employee dishonesty.

Responsible employee:

Sofia Bellaforte.

Supporting narrative:

Sofia allegedly manipulated restricted-fund transfers through her executive credentials, concealed them within donor-events accounting, and disappeared after internal questions began.

The file contained attachments.

Access logs.

Selected emails.

Financial summaries.

And a draft board statement:

The foundation believes Ms. Bellaforte acted outside authorized policy and may have removed herself from jurisdiction to avoid accountability.

Created:

Four days before Sofia disappeared.

Clue one.

Then investigators found a draft restitution agreement.

Sofia Bellaforte would acknowledge:

Unauthorized fund movement.

Personal responsibility for the resulting loss.

Voluntary resignation.

Agreement not to contest the foundation’s insurer recovery.

In return, the foundation would refrain from pursuing unspecified additional civil remedies.

Unsigned.

Clue two.

Dominic read the document.

“They planned for her to sign this?”

Mara answered:

“Looks that way.”

“Why would she?”

“That is what we are trying to establish.”

Then came the third clue.

North Pines invoices changed description after Sofia disappeared.

Before:

Executive wellness support.

After:

Conflict stabilization / document facilitation.

Document facilitation.

Mara stared at the phrase.

The operator claimed it meant helping a distressed client organize personal affairs.

Maybe.

Then investigators found a scanned printer log recovered from a North Pines office computer.

Files printed during Sofia’s time there included:

Foundation resignation.

Insurance loss affidavit.

Mutual nondisparagement agreement.

Statement confirming voluntary travel.

All in Sofia’s name.

Clue three.

None were signed.

Then the insurer produced an email from Veronica sent after police began treating Sofia as endangered rather than voluntary missing.

If insured cannot obtain employee admission due continued absence, what independent evidence is sufficient?

The insurer refused to answer hypothetically.

Required a full investigation.

No claim had been paid.

That mattered.

No insurer had been successfully defrauded yet.

But someone had built the structure.

Then Mara found the most revealing line.

Veronica to Calvin Rusk:

She does not have to love the story. She only has to sign enough of it that nobody can call it ours.

Dominic read it once.

Then again.

The question was no longer whether Veronica knew where Sofia was.

It was what story she needed Sofia alive to authenticate.
