Chapter 13

Veronica’s case took almost two years.
Prosecutors separated what could be proved from what people merely believed about her.
The carriage incident:
Recorded.
The restraint and confinement of Sofia:
Supported by Sofia’s testimony, property records, staff witnesses, and Calvin Rusk’s cooperation.
The insurance scheme:
Supported by draft claims, false narratives, and document packages.
The charity misconduct:
Supported in part, disputed in part, resolved through both criminal and civil processes.
Veronica eventually entered negotiated pleas covering kidnapping-related conspiracy, unlawful confinement, child endangerment, obstruction, and financial offenses tied to the attempted insurance and charity-fund scheme.
Not attempted murder of Rose.
Prosecutors could not prove she intended the carriage to kill the baby.
They could prove reckless endangerment.
That was enough to be serious.
Calvin Rusk pleaded to his own confinement and obstruction offenses.
His cooperation reduced his sentence.
Two North Pines employees received lesser resolutions after prosecutors established they knew Sofia was not there voluntarily but had not designed the plan.
Veronica received a substantial custodial sentence.
Years.
Not months.
Followed by supervision.
Restitution.
Financial penalties.
Permanent exclusion from charitable fiduciary roles.
No contact with Sofia.
No contact with Rose.
Her ownership interests in unrelated lawful investments remained subject to ordinary legal processes.
Prison did not magically erase every asset.
Sofia did not attend sentencing.
Dominic did.
Not to intimidate.
His attorney sat beside him.
When Veronica turned once toward the gallery, Dominic did nothing.
No gesture.
No threat.
No satisfaction.
The old Dominic would have wanted her to see fear.
The new one understood that a courtroom did not need him to supply punishment.
Afterward a reporter shouted:
“Mr. Bellaforte, do you forgive your sister-in-law?”
Dominic kept walking.
Forgiveness was not part of the criminal judgment.
May you like
It was not required for justice.
And it was not a question Rose would inherit from him.
