Chapter 11

Police found Sofia forty-eight hours later.

Not at North Pines.

At a hunting property owned by a company associated with Calvin Rusk’s brother.

The search warrant team entered at dawn.

No gunfight.

No dramatic rescue across rooftops.

A locked bedroom.

Two guards.

A frightened woman sitting on the edge of a bed.

Sofia had lost weight.

She had bruising on one wrist from an earlier restraint.

She was dehydrated.

Her blood pressure was elevated.

Otherwise, doctors expected physical recovery.

When Mara entered the room, Sofia asked one question.

“Rose?”

“Safe.”

Sofia closed her eyes.

Then:

“Dominic?”

“Alive.”

She laughed once.

Barely.

“That wasn’t what I meant.”

Mara understood.

“Dominic is cooperating.”

That surprised Sofia more.

At the hospital, she requested no Bellaforte visitors for the first twenty-four hours.

Including Dominic.

He obeyed.

He sat in a private waiting room with Rose instead.

At noon, Sofia asked to see the baby.

Only Rose.

A child specialist carried her in.

Sofia held her daughter for forty-three minutes.

Nobody interrupted.

Then she asked for Dominic.

He entered alone.

No suit jacket.

No bodyguards.

No performance.

Sofia looked at him for a long time.

“You believed I left?”

“I didn’t know what to believe.”

“You had people searching?”

“Yes.”

“Your people?”

“And police.”

She almost smiled.

“That’s new.”

He looked at the floor.

“I’m changing things.”

“You always change things after they become unbearable.”

He took that without defense.

Then Sofia told him what happened.

Veronica invited her to discuss the audit privately.

Calvin arrived.

Sofia was forced into a vehicle.

Her phone and car were staged separately.

At North Pines, Veronica tried persuasion first.

The foundation could survive.

Donors would be protected.

Money would be restored.

Nobody needed a scandal.

Sofia only needed to accept responsibility for “administrative errors.”

When she refused, the documents changed.

Administrative error became unauthorized transfer.

Unauthorized transfer became employee dishonesty.

Sofia understood.

“They were building a confession around me one page at a time.”

“Did Veronica threaten Rose?”

Sofia’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“That if I turned her into a criminal, my daughter would grow up without both parents.”

Dominic went rigid.

Sofia continued.

“She knew you would either kill someone or go to prison trying.”

He looked at her.

“She knew exactly how to use you.”

That sentence cut deeper than any accusation.

Because it was true.
