Chapter 11 - shifting thrones

Marco dropped his hands slowly, backing away from Amelia until his shoulders hit the shattered wardrobe. Blood streamed down his face, mixing with the sweat on his collar.

"Lorenzo," Marco gasped, raising his palms in surrender. "Listen to me—"

"I listened to you for ten years," Lorenzo said, his voice flat, devoid of humanity. "I listened to you tell me Clara’s brakes failed on Turnpike 9. I listened to you tell me the Morettis were tracking her car."

Lorenzo stepped into the room, kicking the dropped syringe across the floor until it rolled under the bed. He didn't lower his weapon for a fraction of a second.

"Dr. Vance’s wife didn't see an impostor," Lorenzo continued, his voice tightening with suppressed fury. "She saw Helena Cole fleeing in a wig. The same Helena you smuggled out of the guest quarters fifteen minutes ago."

Marco’s jaw tightened. He realized the trap had closed.

"You're weak, Lorenzo," Marco spat, blood staining his white teeth. "Ever since Clara came into your life, you went soft. You wanted legitimate logistics, clean ports, trusts for the boy! You were dismantling everything your father spent forty years building!"

"My father is dead," Lorenzo said coldly. "And so is your career."

Four heavily armed guards, loyal directly to the Rossi bloodline, swarmed into the room with zip-ties and tactical rifles. They slammed Marco to the floor, pinning him down and securing his wrists behind his back.

"Take him to the sub-basement," Lorenzo ordered. "No food. No water. He stays conscious until I come down."

The guards dragged the cursing former security chief out into the hall, leaving the room in a heavy, ringing silence.

Lorenzo lowered his weapon. He turned to Amelia.

She was still standing against the desk, her breath ragged, trembling uncontrollably, her arms wrapped protectively around Leo.

Lorenzo crossed the room in two strides. Without a word of caution or mafia pride, he wrapped his massive arms around both Amelia and his infant son, pulling them flush against his chest.

Amelia buried her face in his shoulder, the sheer adrenaline of the fight finally dissolving into hot, silent tears. Lorenzo’s hand cradled the back of her head, his fingers tangling gently into her dark hair.

"You're safe," Lorenzo murmured against her ear, his deep voice vibrating with fierce protection. "Both of you. I swear it on my life."
