Chapter 15 - an unexpected discovery

By late afternoon, an unfamiliar peace settled over the Rossi estate.

The immediate threat that had strangled the mansion for weeks was broken. Marco Bellini was in federal custody awaiting formal transfer, Victoria Rossi was stripped of every asset and banished, and Dr. Vance had confirmed that Leo was completely free of toxins, gaining weight by the hour.

In the sunlit conservatory, Amelia sat on a wrought-iron bench, rocking Leo to sleep in her arms. The baby had a full belly, his tiny fists curled contentedly against his chest.

Lorenzo walked into the conservatory, carrying a glass of vintage wine and a thin manila envelope. He sat beside Amelia, watching his son sleep.

For the first time since Amelia had met him, the perpetual shadow of tension had lifted from Lorenzo’s striking features.

"The probate court dismissed Victoria’s petition an hour ago," Lorenzo said softly. "Leo’s status as sole heir to the Rossi estate is legally locked."

He set the manila folder on Amelia’s lap.

"What is this?" Amelia asked.

"Legal guardianship papers," Lorenzo answered, his dark eyes intensely focused on hers. "And a deed of trust. As Clara’s sister, you share legal co-guardianship of Leo with me. You have an independent estate in your name, full financial security, and a permanent home here. No one will ever threaten you or make you feel powerless again."

Amelia’s eyes filled with tears. "Lorenzo... I don't need money. I just want him to be safe."

"I know," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a tender, magnetic cadence. He reached over, covering her trembling hand with his own. "That's why I want you by my side. Not as a maid. Not just as Leo’s nurse. But as family."

The emotional current between them was undeniable. The shared grief, the shared bloodline, and the fierce battle they had just fought had bonded them in a way neither could deny.

"Thank you, Lorenzo," Amelia whispered, resting her head gently against his broad shoulder.

Lorenzo smiled faintly, the first real smile she had ever seen on his face.

Then, Dominic, the new head of security, stepped quietly into the conservatory, holding a heavy iron key and a sealed lockbox covered in dust.

"Excuse me, boss," Dominic said cautiously. "We just finished clearing out Marco Bellini’s private safe behind the basement boiler. We found this hidden inside the false floor."

Lorenzo frowned, sitting up. "What is it?"

"It’s Clara’s private lockbox," Dominic said, setting it on the glass table. "The one that went missing from the scene of the turnpike crash."

Lorenzo took the iron key and inserted it into the lock. The brass tumblers clicked open.

Inside the box lay a collection of old photographs and a single, sealed yellow envelope addressed in Clara’s unmistakable cursive handwriting.

Lorenzo unfolded the yellow paper. Amelia leaned in, looking at the faded document.

It wasn't a letter to Lorenzo.

It was an official birth record from a private clinic in Vermont, dated eight weeks ago—two weeks *after* Clara’s supposed death on Turnpike 9.

Amelia’s heart slammed into her throat as she read the mother's name printed on the certificate: *Clara Rossi.*

And stapled to the back of the certificate was a photograph taken just five days ago in a quiet suburb of Montreal: a beautiful woman with Amelia’s exact face, holding a newborn child, standing beside a man whose face was circled in red ink.

Underneath the photo, written in fresh, dark pen, were four words:

*Leo is not mine.*
