Chapter 4 - divided loyalties

Lorenzo didn't flinch, but the air in the room dropped ten degrees.

"Marco has taken two bullets for me," Lorenzo said, his voice deadly level. "His father served my father for thirty years. Be very careful what you accuse him of, Amelia."

"I am not accusing," Amelia replied steadily, holding out the plastic bottle cap. "I am showing you."

Lorenzo took the cap. His thumb brushed against the tiny scratched emblem—the split-tailed viper. His jaw clenched so tight the muscle twitched.

Without another word, Lorenzo walked out of the nursery, gesturing for Amelia to follow.

They descended to the underground control room beneath the mansion. Inside, banks of glowing monitors displayed every corridor, garden path, and perimeter fence.

Marco stood at the central console, reviewing video playback. When Lorenzo entered with Amelia trailing behind, carrying Leo wrapped in a warm blanket, Marco looked up, his brow furrowed.

"Boss? Dr. Vance is on his way with a mobile blood centrifuge," Marco reported. "The perimeter is completely secure. No unauthorized vehicles entered tonight."

Lorenzo didn't acknowledge the report. He stepped directly up to Marco’s console. "Roll back the pantry camera footage from yesterday at 6:00 PM."

Marco hesitated for a fraction of a second. "The pantry camera experienced a hardware fault yesterday afternoon. The tech is replacing the internal drive tomorrow."

Amelia’s heart leaped. A textbook excuse.

Lorenzo leaned down, pressing his knuckles onto the desk. "A hardware fault in the room where my son’s medicine is stored?"

"It happens, Lorenzo," Marco said, his tone respectful but firm, shifting slightly to the familiar first-name basis. "I had two men stationed at the kitchen threshold instead."

"Roll up your right sleeve, Marco."

The command was quiet. It hung in the air like an executioner’s blade.

Marco froze. His dark eyes flickered from Lorenzo to Amelia. A slow, bitter comprehension spread across his face.

"You're letting a maid who walked into this house twenty-one days ago dictate internal security?" Marco asked, disbelief coloring his voice.

"Roll up the sleeve," Lorenzo repeated.

Marco let out a tight breath. Slowly, he unbuttoned his right cuff and pulled the tailored fabric up to his elbow.

There, just above his wrist, was the fresh black ink: a split-tailed viper coiled around an anchor.

Amelia pointed. "That's it. That's the symbol."

Marco didn't panic. Instead, he reached into his breast pocket. Lorenzo’s hand flashed instantly to his holster, but Marco simply withdrew a folded piece of paper and slapped it onto the console.

"It’s not a cartel mark, you idiot," Marco said, his voice raw with sudden emotion. "It’s the insignia of the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion. My brother’s old marine unit. He took his own life last Tuesday. I got the tattoo on Wednesday afternoon in his memory."

Marco glared at Amelia with venomous fury. "Before you ruin twenty years of loyalty, little girl, you might want to learn who you're aiming at."
