Chapter 1 - the ruined gift

The manicured lawns of the Bellucci estate stretched out like an emerald ocean beneath the radiant sun. It was an extravagant outdoor celebration for eight-year-old Charlie Bellucci. Banners fluttered in the light breeze, gourmet catering tables lined the marble terrace, and laughter echoed across the garden.
Little Charlie, sweet, quiet, and impeccably dressed in a pale-blue shirt, navy trousers, and fresh sneakers, stood near the edge of the large stone fountain. In his small hands, he held a brightly wrapped birthday present given to him by his father's closest associates.
Suddenly, twelve-year-old Blake Crowe pushed his way through the crowd of children. Spoiled, arrogant, and wearing an expensive designer polo shirt, Blake sneered at the younger boy. Without a word of warning, Blake snatched the gift right out of Charlie's hands and hurled it deep into the middle of the fountain. Before Charlie could even react, Blake gave him a hard shove, sending the eight-year-old tumbling backward onto the soft grass.
A few feet away stood Vanessa Crowe. Glamorous, elegant, calculating, and vicious, the forty-year-old Mafia socialite held a crystal champagne glass. She wore a luxurious white garden-party dress, sparkling diamond earrings, a matching bracelet, and designer heels. Instead of scolding her son, Vanessa watched the cruelty unfold with a thin, amused smile resting on her rosy lips.
"Maybe the little prince should learn to fight," Vanessa mocked softly, her voice dripping with casual contempt.
Before Blake could take another step toward Charlie, a low, thunderous rumble vibrated through the earth.
Bruno, an enormous black Cane Corso dog, came charging across the wide lawn like a shadow. Powerful, disciplined, fiercely loyal, and extremely protective of Charlie, the massive guard dog planted his heavy paws squarely over the fallen boy. Bruno lowered his broad head, bared his gleaming teeth, and let out a deep, earth-shaking warning bark that echoed off the stone walls of the mansion.
Blake gasped in sheer terror, staggering backward until he almost tripped over his own sneakers.
Through the grand garden entrance walked Dominic Bellucci.
Legendary and immensely powerful, the fearsome Mafia boss commanded total, terrifying silence wherever he stepped. He was muscular, rugged, battle-hardened, deeply masculine, and frighteningly calm. His fair, rosy skin framed a sharply chiselled jaw, and his dark hair was neatly styled. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, an open-collar shirt, a luxury wristwatch, and polished leather shoes.
Dominic’s sharp eyes swept across the lawn. He saw Bruno standing guard over his crying son, and he immediately adjusted his stride. He walked calmly up to Charlie, crouching down for a split second to ensure his boy was uninjured.
Charlie looked up at his father, tears staining his soft cheeks as he pointed a trembling finger toward the socialite in white.
"She told him to do it, Dad," Charlie wept quietly.
Dominic’s expression didn't shatter; it locked into lethal, terrifying steel. He gently moved Charlie behind Bruno's broad frame. Then, with slow, measured steps, Dominic walked straight toward Vanessa Crowe.
Vanessa’s arrogant smile wavered for a fraction of a second, but she kept her chin high.
Without uttering a single word, Dominic reached out with his broad, calloused hand, snatched the crystal champagne glass directly from Vanessa's fingers, and splashed the sparkling liquid directly into her face. Before she could gasp, Dominic placed his broad palm against her shoulder and shoved her backward.
Vanessa tumbled into the shallow stone fountain with a loud splash, her expensive white dress instantly soaking through and clinging to her.
The entire garden went deathly silent. Guests froze in place, and security guards held their breath.
Vanessa scrambled to her feet in the knee-deep water, dripping wet, her fine hair plastered to her cheeks, her face twisted in pure, venomous rage.
"Touch me again," Vanessa spat, her voice shaking with venom, "and Charlie learns who his real mother is."
Dominic’s frighteningly calm expression changed instantly. A dark, dangerous shadow crossed his eyes.
"She died before he was born," Dominic said, his voice ice-cold.

Vanessa wiped the water from her eyes, and a slow, wicked smile spread across her wet face.
As Vanessa stepped out of the fountain, she casually tossed a small silver key onto the wet stone edge, leaving Dominic staring at the glinting metal as the guests began to whisper.
