Chapter 6 - the Connecticut trail

By ten o'clock that evening, a three-car convoy of black armored SUVs was tearing through the darkness along the coastal highway toward Greenwich, Connecticut.

Inside the lead vehicle, Dominic sat in the dark leather back seat, adjusting his black suit jacket. Beside him sat Bruno, his massive head resting on Dominic’s knee, his dark eyes alert and waiting. Frank was in the passenger seat, reviewing thermal satellite feeds on a encrypted laptop screen.

"The location is St. Margaret's Academy," Frank reported, turning his screen so Dominic could see the floor plan. "It's a high-end private boarding school funded entirely by a shell company owned by Vanessa's family."

"How many guards?" Dominic asked flatly.

"Four private security officers on the gate, two patrolling the dormitories," Frank answered. "Vanessa thinks she has until midnight, so she hasn't reinforced the perimeter yet."

Dominic looked out at the rain-slicked highway. "We don't wait until midnight. We take my daughter now."

Ten minutes later, the convoy pulled up to the rear wooded edge of the St. Margaret's estate, avoiding the main gate entirely.

Frank and four heavily armed Bellucci enforcers stepped quietly out into the cool night air, disabling the perimeter fence sensors with a military-grade jammer. Dominic stepped out last, gesturing for Bruno to stay close.

They moved like shadows through the manicured gardens behind the brick dormitory building. Bruno led the way, his keen nose tracking the scent of the estate layout with absolute precision.

At the base of the eastern wing, Frank picked the lock on the heavy brass service door in five seconds flat. They stepped inside the carpeted hallway, where soft nightlights illuminated rows of white oak doors.

Bruno stopped directly outside Room 104. He sat down quietly on his haunches and gave a single, soft whine.

Dominic walked up to the door. His heart, usually steady as iron, beat with a sudden, powerful rhythm against his ribs. He slowly turned the brass doorknob and pushed the door open.

Inside the quiet room, a small eight-year-old girl was sitting on the window seat, looking out at the rain. She had soft, chestnut-brown hair, fair, rosy skin, and striking light eyes—the exact duplicate of Sophia's face. She wore a simple pale-yellow nightgown and clutched a plush white rabbit against her chest.

She turned her head as the door opened, showing no fear as her wide eyes met Dominic’s broad frame.

"Are you the man from the picture?" she asked softly in a sweet, gentle voice.
