Chapter 2 - the silver key

The quiet inside Dominic’s private study was heavier than the silence in the garden had been. Sunlight filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting long, geometric shadows across the polished mahogany floor.

Dominic sat behind his massive desk, his black suit jacket draped over the back of his chair. On the leather blotter in front of him lay the small silver key Vanessa had dropped by the fountain. Beside the desk, Bruno sat motionless, his dark eyes fixed on the door, his ears perked for any sound in the hallway.

A quiet knock sounded at the heavy oak door before Dominic’s head of security stepped inside, holding a thin manila folder.

"Boss," the security chief reported quietly. "Vanessa Crowe and her son left the estate grounds ten minutes ago. Our perimeter teams checked her vehicle. She didn't leave any extra personnel behind."

Dominic didn't look up from the silver key. "Where did she get this key, Frank?"

"We ran a forensic scan on the serial number stamped along the spine," Frank answered, setting the folder on the desk. "It belongs to a private safety deposit box at the First National Bank of Manhattan. The box was opened eight years ago... under your late wife's maiden name."

Dominic froze. His broad hand reached out, picking up the key between his thick fingers.

"Sophia opened this box?" Dominic asked, his deep voice dropping into a dangerous register.

"The signature on the bank ledger matches Sophia’s handwriting," Frank said softly. "But Boss... the box was accessed three days ago. By someone using Vanessa Crowe's personal biometric code."

Dominic’s dark eyes narrowed into lethal slits. "Sophia died in a private hospital eight years ago during a premature delivery. Vanessa was nowhere near that building."

"That's what the official reports said," Frank noted carefully. "But when we tried to pull the original paper records from the hospital archive an hour ago... the entire file for that night had been wiped from the database."

Just then, the study door creaked open. Little Charlie peeked inside, holding a small plush dog under his arm. His pale-blue shirt was clean, but his small face still carried a quiet sadness.

"Dad?" Charlie asked softly. "Is Bruno allowed to come watch movies with me?"

Dominic’s stern features softened instantly. He gestured for his son to come closer. Charlie walked across the soft rug, resting his small chin against his father's broad knee. Dominic reached out, gently patting Charlie's soft brown hair.

"Bruno can stay with you as long as you want, quiet hero," Dominic said gently.

Charlie looked down at the silver key resting on the desk blotter. His small brow furrowed in confusion.

"That looks like the key from Mommy's old music box," Charlie whispered innocently.

Dominic’s hand paused over his son's shoulder. "What music box, Charlie?"

"The one under the floorboard in my closet," Charlie said cleanly. "A lady in a white dress showed it to me last month when you were in Chicago."
