Chapter 15

A year and a half after Ethan pushed bread through the kitchen vent, Ryan hosted dinner at the house.

Not a Carter family banquet.

No capos.

No business partners.

No people discussing inheritance around children.

Tessa came.

Emma came.

Julia stopped by long enough to insult Ryan’s cooking and leave.

Ethan made garlic bread.

Ryan supervised because Ethan believed burning the edges made it “restaurant style.”

Emma disagreed.

“It’s black.”

“It’s toasted.”

“It’s black.”

Ryan looked at both of them.

“She has a point.”

Ethan betrayed him immediately.

“You burn steak.”

“That is unrelated.”

Tessa laughed from the table.

The sound felt strange inside the house.

Good strange.

Dinner was ordinary.

Emma asked for more pasta.

Ethan complained about school.

Tessa corrected Ryan when he tried to give Emma soda after she had already had two glasses.

Ryan obeyed.

That amused everyone except him.

Afterward, Emma carried her plate toward the sink.

She stopped near the old service opening.

The space now held cleaning supplies and a basket of reusable shopping bags.

Nothing hidden.

Nothing locked.

Ryan noticed where she was looking.

“You okay?”

Emma nodded.

Then she looked at him.

For the first months after they met, she had called him Daddy because that was the word Tessa had given her before she understood what a father actually was.

Later she stopped.

She called him Ryan.

Nobody corrected her.

Now she asked:

“Do you care if I still call you Ryan?”

Ryan felt something tighten behind his ribs.

“No.”

“Even though you’re my dad?”

“Yes.”

She thought about it.

“What if I call you Dad later?”

“That works too.”

“What if I don’t?”

He paused only a second.

“That works too.”

Emma studied his face, checking whether he meant it.

Then nodded.

“Okay, Ryan.”

She carried the plate into the kitchen.

Ethan shouted that she was putting it in the wrong side of the sink.

Emma shouted back that sinks did not have sides.

Tessa followed to prevent a sibling war over plumbing.

Ryan stayed in the hallway.

Claire’s scheme was finished.

Emma’s identity was legally settled.

The false payment trail had been exposed.

The trust had been restructured.

Ethan knew telling the truth had not destroyed his family.

Tessa no longer believed Ryan had abandoned their daughter.

Everything evidence, money, and law could settle had been settled.

Only one thing remained entirely outside Ryan’s control.

Whether the little girl who once called him Daddy from behind a wall would someday choose that word again because she knew him well enough to mean it.

May you like

Ryan did not chase the answer.

For the first time, he understood that being her father did not give him ownership of it.
