Chapter 2

Emma’s mother was alive.

That was the first thing police confirmed.

Her name was Tessa Lane.

Thirty-five years old.

She was recovering at St. Matthew’s Hospital after an emergency appendectomy complicated by internal bleeding.

She had been admitted shortly before noon.

Emma had been with a neighbor when the hospital attempted to reach the emergency contacts listed in Tessa’s file.

The first number belonged to Tessa’s sister in Oregon.

No answer.

The second number belonged to Ryan Carter.

Ryan stared at the report.

“I’ve never been contacted by this hospital.”

Julia asked the officer:

“Who answered?”

The officer checked.

“A woman.”

Ryan looked toward Claire.

She was sitting across the kitchen with her attorney now present.

Claire said nothing.

The hospital had called the main Carter residence because Tessa’s form listed both Ryan’s cell number and household contact information.

Ryan’s cell had been temporarily shut off during a secure meeting that afternoon.

The house answered.

Claire spoke to a hospital social worker.

She identified herself as Ryan Carter’s wife.

That part was true.

Then she said Ryan was aware of Emma and that someone from the household would collect her.

Claire personally drove to the neighbor’s home.

She showed identification.

She picked up Emma.

The neighbor believed the child was going to her father’s house.

Technically, she was.

Ryan asked:

“What happened when she got here?”

Emma sat with a child-services worker in the living room.

Claire’s attorney advised her not to answer.

Ryan looked at him.

Then at his wife.

“This is your strategy?”

Julia touched Ryan’s arm.

“Not now.”

He stepped back.

Claire was entitled to counsel.

He knew that.

He also knew what entitlement did not mean.

She was not staying in the house that night.

Police did not arrest her immediately.

They were still determining exactly what laws applied to the confinement, what Claire intended, and how long Emma had been restrained.

But Ryan told security that Claire’s access to the residence was revoked pending legal review.

Julia immediately corrected him.

“She lives here. You may need a formal order.”

Ryan looked at her.

“Then get one.”

“For tonight, she has agreed through counsel to stay elsewhere.”

“Good.”

Claire stood.

Ethan came into the hallway.

He saw his mother carrying her purse.

“Mom?”

Claire stopped.

The anger disappeared from her face.

She looked suddenly devastated.

Ryan saw it.

Whatever else Claire had done, she loved Ethan.

That did not make the wall disappear.

Ethan looked at his father.

“Is Mom leaving because I told?”

Ryan crossed the hall instantly.

“No.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Ryan crouched in front of his son.

“Listen carefully. Your mother is leaving because of decisions adults made.”

“But I told you.”

“And you did the right thing.”

Ethan began to cry.

Ryan held him.

Claire turned away.

Later, when both children were asleep in separate rooms under professional supervision, Julia finally opened Tessa’s sealed letter with Ryan.

The first line was simple.

Ryan, I have tried to reach you more times than I can count.

He stopped reading.

Julia waited.

Ryan continued.

Tessa wrote that Emma was his biological daughter.

She said she had proof.

She said she no longer wanted secrecy.

Then one sentence changed everything.

I kept my promise for five years because your wife said it was what you demanded.

Ryan lowered the page.

May you like

He looked at Julia.

“My wife knew for five years.”
