Chapter 8

Ryan’s advisers told him to contain the problem.

Fight the subpoenas.

Separate Emma’s paternity from the trust.

Negotiate with Claire.

Keep the financial audit narrow.

Ryan understood why.

The Carter family had spent decades mixing legitimate wealth with a culture built on secrecy.

The trust itself was legal.

Carter Holdings was legal.

Not every historical payment would be easy to explain.

An unrestricted audit might expose tax problems.

Questionable consulting fees.

Old settlement practices.

Cash transactions inherited from Ryan’s father.

And Ryan himself had approved things over the years without demanding the documentation he now wished existed.

Julia laid the authorization on his desk.

“If you open everything, you lose control of the investigation.”

Ryan looked at her.

“I already lost control.”

“You know what I mean.”

“Yes.”

“Independent trustees get every relevant record.”

“Yes.”

“Forensic accountants can follow related transactions.”

“Yes.”

“If they discover unrelated misconduct with reporting obligations—”

“They report it.”

Julia studied him.

“You may lose voting power temporarily even if Claire framed the Emma issue.”

“I know.”

“Your legitimate businesses may suffer.”

“I know.”

“Your family will call this betrayal.”

Ryan almost smiled.

“My family calls indoor plumbing suspicious if an outsider installed it.”

Julia did not laugh.

Ryan looked toward Ethan and Emma playing a board game in the next room under Dr. Lin’s supervision.

His son had spent days wondering if truth destroyed families.

Emma had spent five years believing silence was her father’s choice.

Ryan picked up the pen.

“If I hide records now because they hurt me, Claire gets to teach both children the same lesson.”

“What lesson?”

“That powerful people only want truth when they control it.”

He signed.

The independent review began that afternoon.

Ryan temporarily delegated his Carter Trust voting authority to three outside trustees while the investigation proceeded.

The decision was nearly impossible to reverse without appearing to obstruct the process.

His uncle called within twenty minutes.

“What the hell have you done?”

“Opened the books.”

“You’re insane.”

“Possible.”

“You’re handing strangers our family.”

Ryan looked toward the kitchen vent, now removed entirely.

“No.”

His voice stayed calm.

“I’m finding out what my family actually is when nobody is allowed to hide behind my name.”

The first consequences arrived before sunset.

A bank delayed refinancing on one Carter property.

Two directors requested special compliance reviews.

One longtime business partner postponed a major acquisition.

Ryan lost leverage.

Money.

Status.

He accepted all three.

Then the forensic team recovered an email Claire had deleted five years earlier.
