Chapter 13

Ryan met Claire one last time before the divorce negotiations became formal.
She requested it.
Allison attended.
Claire looked thinner.
Calmer.
The panic was gone.
“What do you want me to say?” she asked.
Ryan answered:
“The truth without explaining why it was reasonable.”
Claire looked down.
Then she began.
“I hated Jenna before I knew her.”
Ryan said nothing.
“I thought if you had a child with someone else, then everything between us would become less important.”
She swallowed.
“Then Ethan was born.”
Ryan waited.
“I told myself I was protecting him.”
“And later?”
Claire looked at him.
“Later I was protecting me.”
That was the answer.
“The governance reform scared me.”
“Why?”
“Because every year our life became more dependent on decisions I didn’t control.”
“You were wealthy.”
“It wasn’t money.”
Ryan almost smiled bitterly.
“No.”
“It was being important.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“When we married, I thought being your wife meant I was part of everything.”
“And then?”
“You started building systems that didn’t need me.”
Independent boards.
Professional trustees.
Outside compliance.
Limits on family privileges.
Ryan had believed he was reducing risk.
Claire experienced it as erasure.
That resentment found the Sadie file waiting.
“You were going to destroy me,” Ryan said.
Claire shook her head.
“I wanted leverage.”
“With forged evidence.”
“Yes.”
“With a child I didn’t know existed.”
“Yes.”
“With Ethan as your justification.”
Claire began crying.
“Yes.”
Ryan sat back.
For the first time, he understood the motive completely.
It did not make him less angry.
It made the betrayal more coherent.
Claire had not suddenly become monstrous.
She had repeatedly chosen control over honesty until the choices became monstrous.
Ryan asked:
“Do you love Ethan?”
“Yes.”
Immediately.
“Did you love me?”
Claire looked at him.
“Yes.”
Ryan nodded.
“I believe you.”
That surprised her.
Then he continued.
“And neither fact fixes what you did.”
May you like
Her face crumpled.
That was the last personal conversation they had as husband and wife.
