Chapter 7

The private investigator Claire hired five years earlier was named Neil Mercer.

He agreed to speak after receiving a subpoena in the civil case.

Neil had investigated Jenna.

Her finances.

Her address.

Her medical history where lawfully accessible.

Her social media.

Her family.

But Ryan’s attorney found another assignment.

Neil had also investigated Ryan.

“What exactly?” Ryan asked.

Neil looked uncomfortable.

“Your schedules.”

“Why?”

“I was told there was concern you might discover Ms. Monroe independently.”

“Anything else?”

“Your trust approvals.”

Allison looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

“Mrs. Carter wanted to know how digital approvals were verified.”

Ryan went still.

Five years earlier, Neil had produced a report describing Ryan’s executive signature system.

It used two-factor authentication.

But family-management approvals below a certain threshold could be processed through a delegated household administrator.

Claire held that role.

Her access allowed her to attach Ryan’s digital signature to routine family-account transactions.

The Carter Family Support payments stayed deliberately below the threshold requiring independent confirmation.

Allison looked at Ryan.

“She designed the amount.”

“Yes.”

Neil continued.

Claire asked him one more question.

Could historical payment records later establish knowledge?

He said they might.

Ryan stared at him.

“You told my wife that if money left my account for Sadie, it could look like I knew about her.”

Neil nodded reluctantly.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before the first payment.”

The room changed.

Claire had not accidentally created misleading records.

She understood their potential evidentiary value from the beginning.

Allison asked:

“Did she say why that mattered?”

Neil hesitated.

“She said she needed protection.”

“From?”

“Ryan.”

Ryan almost laughed.

Neil continued.

“She said if the marriage ever failed, Ryan could destroy her financially.”

Ryan looked at Allison.

His prenuptial agreement was generous.

But most Carter trust assets remained separate.

If Claire divorced him under ordinary circumstances, she would leave wealthy.

Not powerful.

If Ryan were removed from family trust governance for misconduct, however, a clause in the marital agreement required renegotiation of certain housing and security arrangements because Claire and Ethan would lose protections attached to Ryan’s office.

That gave her leverage.

Not ownership of the empire.

Negotiating leverage.

Now the pieces were becoming darker.

Claire had not only been preserving Ethan’s status.

She had been building insurance against Ryan.

But one critical question remained.

Had she intended from the beginning to use Sadie as that weapon?

May you like

Or had the plan evolved later?

The answer was buried in her old email archive.
