Chapter 4

The DNA test confirmed paternity.

Ryan was Sadie’s biological father.

The result hurt less than the surrounding deception.

Sadie herself had changed nothing.

She remained the same five-year-old who hated apple juice, slept with one sock off, and called every dog “sir.”

Ryan’s responsibility toward her existed regardless of how angry he was at Claire.

He began supervised visits while Jenna recovered.

Slow.

Careful.

No immediate custody demand.

No attempt to replace Jenna.

Ethan came to one visit.

He brought a bag of dinner rolls.

Ryan stared at him.

Ethan shrugged.

“She likes bread.”

Sadie smiled.

That moment nearly broke Ryan.

Then Allison arrived with the first financial report.

Carter Family Support Services was not a real operating company.

It was an LLC.

The LLC received money from Ryan and Claire’s joint family-management account.

Ryan frowned.

“I never approved a recurring payment.”

“Your digital approval appears on every annual authorization.”

He stared.

“Forged?”

“We don’t know yet.”

The payments to Jenna totaled approximately $120,000 over five years.

But the LLC had received almost $900,000.

Ryan looked up.

“Where did the rest go?”

Allison turned another page.

Legal fees.

Consulting retainers.

Private investigation.

And several transfers into a brokerage account controlled by Claire.

Ryan became still.

“How much?”

“About four hundred thousand dollars.”

Claire’s secret had become profitable.

Still, Allison cautioned him.

“That does not mean profit was the original motive.”

“Doesn’t matter.”

“It matters legally.”

Ryan hated that she was right.

They traced the first account authorization.

It had been opened six weeks after Sadie was born.

Claire signed as administrator.

Ryan’s digital signature appeared as co-authorizer.

Then Allison found something stranger.

Two months before the LLC was created, Claire paid a trust lawyer for a memorandum.

Subject:

Unacknowledged biological child — effect on Carter Family Trust distribution.

Ryan stared at the title.

Claire had been asking financial questions about Sadie almost immediately after the child was born.

That was the first sign that this secret had never been only about protecting a marriage.
