Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Heir

By nine o'clock the following morning, the grand ballroom of the Castalano estate was bathed in brilliant, golden sunlight. Three massive crystal chandeliers caught the morning light, casting shimmering rainbows across the polished oak floor and dark wood-paneled walls.
Standing along the perimeter of the vast room were the remaining senior lieutenants, regional captains, and security commanders of the entire syndicate—over fifty powerful men dressed in dark suits, standing in complete, respectful silence.
At the head of the room, standing beside his grand oak desk, was Vincent Castalano.
The heavy double doors at the far end of the ballroom opened.
Claire Bennett stepped into the room. She wore an exquisite, floor-length dark emerald velvet gown that draped with regal elegance around her frame. Her soft brown hair was styled neatly, and hanging around her neck was the polished silver locket bearing the Castalano phoenix crest.
Holding her hand, looking entirely unbothered by the dozens of intimidating men staring at her, was three-year-old Mia. She wore a fresh yellow sundress with a matching yellow bow in her curly hair, her bright eyes scanning the grand room with delightful curiosity.
As Claire walked down the center aisle, every single syndicate leader bowed his head in deep, absolute deference.
Claire stopped before Vincent’s desk, her heart swelling with an emotion she had never felt before—a profound sense of belonging, safety, and pride.
Vincent picked up the ribbon-bound parchment document from his desk and stepped forward. His deep, gravelly voice echoed clearly off the high ceilings, addressing every man in the room.
"Twenty-six years ago, my elder sister's branch of this family was targeted by traitors who sought to destroy our legacy," Vincent announced, his presence commanding absolute authority. "Today, the treason has been wiped clean forever."
He looked down at Claire, his cold eyes softening with undeniable warmth and pride.
"This document is the original, unsealed testament of the Castalano estate," Vincent continued. "Under its terms, Claire Bennett is declared the legitimate daughter of Elena Castalano, rightful co-inheritor of our global assets, and a sovereign member of this family. And her daughter, Mia, carries the future blood of our empire."
Gasps of quiet reverence rippled through the gathered lieutenants.
Vincent turned to Claire, holding out a gold signet ring bearing the family crest. "You have a choice, Claire. You can take your full inheritance and live anywhere in the world with total financial independence and absolute security. Or you can take your place beside me, as a true leader of this house."
Claire looked at the gold ring resting in his broad palm, then up into the eyes of the man who had protected her mother, saved her life as a child, and shielded her daughter from the dark shadows of the world.
She didn't hesitate.
Claire reached out and took the gold signet ring, slipping it onto her finger. "I am home, Vincent. We stay right here."
Mia looked up at Vincent, folded her tiny arms across her yellow dress, squints her eyes, and made her famous grumpy face once more.
"You look mad again, dragon man," Mia declared solemnly.
A chorus of soft chuckles broke out among the hardened bodyguards, and Vincent let out a soft, low smirk-laugh, reaching down to scoop the toddler effortlessly up into his broad arm.
Renzo walked up to Vincent's side, holding his tablet. He leaned in, whispering quietly so only Vincent could hear.
"Boss," Renzo murmured, showing him a new red alert flashing on the screen. "An encrypted message just arrived from a syndicate in London. They’ve detected our movement and are questioning the new hierarchy."

Vincent looked at the tablet screen, then at Claire, and finally at the little girl resting safely against his broad shoulder. A calm, dangerous smile touched his lips.
"Let them question it," Vincent said softly, his voice sharp as steel. "Tell London that if they want answers... they can come try to take them."
