Chapter 7 - Silent Vigil

"You saved me," Claire whispered, her voice trembling as she looked up at Vincent from the floor of the secret room. "That night... when the estate was attacked... you hid me."
Vincent walked slowly into the hidden room, his heavy shoes sounding hollow against the stone floor. He looked around at the old toys, a rare expression of deep melancholia touching his rugged features.
"Your mother was my elder sister's daughter," Vincent said quietly. "When the traitorous factions within our own syndicate launched a coup twenty-six years ago, they targeted every direct heir. I managed to extract you and your mother from the fire, but to keep you safe, I had to send you both away under false identities. I swore to your mother that I would clean the blood from our family name before I ever brought you back."
"Why didn't you tell me yesterday?" Claire asked, rising to her feet.
"Because the men who ordered that strike twenty-six years ago are still alive," Vincent replied, his voice hardening into cold steel. "And until I eliminate them completely, your name is a target."
Before Claire could respond, a violent clap of thunder shook the entire mansion. Heavy rain began to batter the stained-glass window above.
Downstairs, the estate’s primary security alarms began to blare—a sharp, rhythmic horn echoing through the vast hallways.
The lights in the hidden room flickered once, twice, and then died completely, plunging the estate into pitch darkness lit only by the red glow of emergency backup lanterns.
Vincent pulled a heavy sidearm from his shoulder holster with lightning speed. "Renzo!" he barked into his lapel radio.
Static crackled through the speaker. "Boss! We have a breach at the west perimeter wall! A team of high-grade mercenaries cut the power lines and bypassed the motion sensors! They are inside the mansion!"
"Get the secondary squad to the second floor now!" Vincent ordered. He turned to Claire, his eyes blazing in the dim red light. "Stay inside this hidden room. Lock the latch from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me or Renzo."
Mia whimpered softly, clinging to Claire's skirt. Vincent dropped to one knee, looking directly into the little girl's eyes. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, metallic badge shaped like a star, pressing it into her tiny palm.
"You hold the star, little bug," Vincent whispered gently. "No bad dragon comes through that door while you hold the star."
Mia nodded bravely, squeezing the metal badge tightly in her fist.
Vincent stood up, shoved Claire and Mia back into the hidden room, and swung the heavy mahogany cabinet shut, locking them into safety.
Outside in the library, the dark silence was broken by the sharp crack of silenced automatic gunfire.
Vincent moved like a phantom through the shadows of the library. Three mercenaries dressed in dark tactical gear stepped through the doorway, their night-vision goggles glowing green.
Vincent fired three precise, lethal shots in rapid succession. The three men collapsed to the floor before they could even locate their target.
He advanced through the hallway, his presence absolute and terrifying. Another tactical operative lunged from a side corridor, but Vincent caught the man's arm, snapped the weapon away, and neutralized him with brutal efficiency.
Five minutes later, the main hall below fell silent. Renzo and six heavily armed Castalano enforcers moved through the foyer, securing the perimeter as emergency power generators kicked on, flooding the estate with bright white light again.
Renzo walked up to the second-floor balcony where Vincent stood, wiping blood from his cheek with a white handkerchief. In the center of the hall below, two surviving mercenaries were pinned to the floor by bodyguards.
"The breach is contained, Boss," Renzo reported, breathing heavily. "They were Vanguard contractors."
Vincent walked down the grand staircase, his leather shoes clicking loudly. He stopped directly in front of the captured mercenary leader kneeling on the marble floor.

Vincent pressed the barrel of his sidearm against the man's forehead. "Who bought the contract?"
The mercenary spat blood onto the marble, sneering up at the crime boss. "You think you're untouchable, Castalano? The contract didn't come from a rival boss. It came from inside your own inner circle. Someone who knows the child carries the master bloodline."
