Chapter 8 - The Sealed Legacy

The revelation that a traitor operated within the inner circle sent shockwaves through the highest ranks of the Castalano syndicate. Vincent immediately placed the entire estate on absolute lockdown. No one was allowed to leave, no mobile devices were permitted, and every lieutenant was restricted to their private quarters under armed guard.

To ensure Claire and Mia’s absolute safety while he flushed out the traitor, Vincent moved them to a secure, fortified lodge located deep within a private pine forest thirty miles north of the city.

The lodge was built like a fortress—reinforced timber walls, bulletproof glass windows, and a subterranean bunker equipped with independent life-support systems.

Claire sat near the stone fireplace in the lodge's great room, watching the crackling fire while Mia played peacefully on a plush bear rug with her wooden building blocks.

The heavy wooden front door opened, and Vincent stepped inside, wearing a dark wool overcoat covered in light snow. He removed his coat, handing it to a bodyguard stationed at the door, and walked over to the fire.

"Is the estate secure?" Claire asked softly, looking up at him.

"It will be soon," Vincent replied, taking a seat in a heavy leather armchair opposite her. He looked tired—the deep lines on his rugged face showing the heavy burden of running a global empire while protecting his family.

Claire watched him quietly for a moment. "You've spent your entire life doing this, haven’t you? Fighting in the shadows so everyone else can live."

Vincent looked into the roaring flames. "In our world, weakness is an invitation to destruction. If you show mercy to your enemies, they kill the people you love. I made a choice thirty years ago to become the monster that keeps the other monsters away."

"You're not a monster," Claire said softly, her voice filled with deep, undeniable sincerity. "Not to me. And certainly not to Mia."

At the sound of her name, Mia looked up from her blocks, trotted over to Vincent’s chair, and unceremoniously climbed right onto his lap. She reached up and pulled his black tie slightly askew.

"Dragon man looks tired," Mia observed, nodding wisely.

Vincent let out a small, genuine laugh, adjusting his tie while resting his large hand gently on her back. "Dragon man is fine, little bug."

Claire smiled—a warm, radiant smile that illuminated her fair, rosy features. For the first time in her life, she felt genuinely safe, bound to a man whose terrifying strength was matched only by his absolute, unyielding loyalty to his blood.

Suddenly, the front door opened, and Renzo stepped into the lodge, holding a high-tech electronic frequency scanner. His face was pale.

"Boss," Renzo said, his voice tight. "I just conducted a deep electronic sweep of the estate study back home, as well as the transport vehicles we used today."

Vincent’s eyes narrowed into slits. "What did you find?"

Renzo walked over to the table and set down a tiny, micro-electronic transmitter no larger than a grain of rice.

"It was planted inside the vintage grandfather clock in your private study three days ago," Renzo reported. "It operates on a closed-circuit shortwave frequency that can only be picked up by a receiver located within five hundred yards of the estate."

May you like

Vincent stared at the tiny device, his jaw setting like iron. "A shortwave receiver means the traitor didn't send the signal to an outside syndicate. They were standing on my lawn when the mercenaries breached the gate."

Renzo bowed his head. "There were only four people on the lawn during the breach, Boss. Your senior lieutenants."
