Chapter 6 - The Broken Mirror

The mood inside the Castalano estate shifted overnight from luxurious tranquility to a fortress on total war footing. Additional security details were deployed around the perimeter, heavy iron gates were locked down, and snipers were stationed along the estate's high stone walls.

Claire felt the suffocating atmosphere instantly. Though she was now treated like royalty—provided with luxurious clothes, private living quarters, and endless amenities—she felt more trapped than ever.

In the late afternoon, while Vincent was locked in high-level tactical meetings with his lieutenants, Claire took Mia for a walk through the estate’s vast private library on the second floor. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined the walls, filled with thousands of rare, leather-bound volumes.

Mia wandered down one of the quiet aisles, her small white shoes squeaking softly on the polished parquet floor. She reached out her hand, running her fingers along the lower shelves.

"Mia, sweetie, stay close to mommy," Claire called out gently, trailing behind her.

Mia stopped near a massive mahogany cabinet built into the corner of the wall. She pointed her tiny finger at a small gap near the baseboard. "Mommy, look. A little door."

Claire kneeled down beside her daughter. Near the bottom of the cabinet was a subtle brass keyhole concealed behind a sliding piece of carved wood.

Claire reached into her dress pocket, pulling out the silver locket her mother had given her. She looked closely at the delicate filigree design on the back of the locket. The central pin was shaped exactly like the keyhole.

Heart hammering against her ribs, Claire pressed the back of the locket against the concealed keyhole.

A heavy mechanical click echoed through the quiet library.

The entire mahogany cabinet swung outward on hidden iron hinges, revealing a small, hidden room built into the stone architecture of the mansion.

Claire gasped, taking Mia's hand as they stepped inside.

The room was pristine, completely untouched by dust, illuminated by a single stained-glass window high above. In the center of the room sat a small child's wooden desk, a rocking horse, and a glass display case containing a beautifully crafted vintage music box made of polished rosewood and inlaid gold.

Mia ran over to the display case, pointing eagerly. "Music box! Mommy, make it play!"

Claire gently lifted the glass dome and turned the small brass key on the side of the rosewood box.

The mechanical gears began to hum softly, and a sweet, haunting lullaby echoed through the hidden room—a delicate melody played on high-pitched metallic notes.

Claire froze. Her eyes widened in shock as a sudden, overwhelming wave of memory washed over her mind.

She was four years old again. Sitting in this very room. The smell of gunsmoke in the air outside. Shouting men. Her mother crying as she locked her inside this tiny room, winding this exact music box to drown out the sound of gunfire outside the door.

And then, a tall, broad man in a dark suit bursting through the door, scooping her into his arms, his deep voice whispering into her hair: "I've got you, little one. Uncle Vincent has got you."

Claire fell to her knees, tears streaming freely down her cheeks as the forgotten memory came rushing back with terrifying clarity. Vincent hadn't just known her mother—he had saved Claire's life during the night her mother's branch of the family was betrayed.

Suddenly, a heavy shadow fell across the threshold of the hidden room.

Vincent stood in the doorway, his massive frame blocking out the light, his dark eyes looking down at her with deep, unreadable emotion.

"You weren't supposed to remember this place, Claire," Vincent said quietly.
