Chapter 14

Corinne’s cases resolved fourteen months after the dinner.
The final outcome was less theatrical than the family gossip predicted.
She accepted responsibility for conduct involving Poppy’s confinement, unauthorized removal and use of private records, and the coercive financial scheme built around the stolen archive and planned public confrontation.
The combined consequences included incarceration, financial restitution, probationary supervision after release, and a permanent protective order barring direct contact with Poppy.
Her civil claims against Thayer were resolved separately.
She retained property she legally owned.
She did not receive the fourteen-million-dollar demand.
The stolen archive materials were returned or destroyed under court supervision after preservation requirements ended.
Holt Atelier entered restructuring and was eventually sold.
Thayer did not buy it to humiliate her.
He did not interfere with the sale.
Her business failed or survived on ordinary commercial terms.
Graham Pike avoided the most serious consequences because evidence did not establish that he participated in the child abuse.
He lost clients.
He cooperated with investigators.
His firm changed its internal policies regarding reputation work tied to active domestic disputes.
Thayer’s own court obligations ended only after he completed every required program.
He attended all of them.
No private substitute.
No assistant signing attendance sheets.
No family influence.
When the judge formally closed his matter, Thayer did not celebrate.
He went home.
Poppy was waiting in Elise’s old room.
The room was no longer sealed.
Thayer and Poppy had spent months deciding what to do with it.
Most legal records went permanently to outside counsel.
Elise’s personal items stayed.
Photographs.
Books.
A pale sweater.
Her music box.
Poppy returned the brass key to the box.
Then changed her mind.
“Can I keep it?”
Thayer looked at her.
“The door doesn’t lock anymore.”
“I know.”
“Then why keep the key?”
Poppy shrugged.
“It was Mommy’s.”
Thayer smiled.
“Then it’s yours.”
The room became a reading room.
Bright curtains.
A small desk for Poppy.
No secrets.
May you like
No locked door.
That was the point.
