Chapter 7

Security recovered deleted access footage from a secondary storage server.

The hallway cameras had not been completely erased.

Only the main interface had been overwritten automatically after thirty days.

The archive held fragments.

Six family gatherings.

Six appearances by Corinne near Elise’s room.

Four showed Poppy entering the hallway first.

Then Corinne.

Then, minutes later, Corinne escorting Poppy away.

At two gatherings, Poppy disappeared from camera until much later.

Those were the dates Nora remembered finding her near the coatroom.

Thayer watched once.

Only once.

He refused to turn his daughter’s humiliation into something he replayed compulsively.

Miriam noticed.

She said nothing.

One clip showed Corinne entering Elise’s room with a document bag.

Another showed her leaving with the bag fuller.

The missing blue folder had probably left the house that night.

Then investigators found a message between Corinne and Graham.

Corinne:

He will never choose me over her.

Graham:

Then stop treating that as a weakness in your position. Predictability is useful.

Corinne:

You really think he’ll react in front of people?

Graham:

You know him better than I do.

No instruction to hurt Poppy.

No order to stage violence.

But Corinne was considering Thayer’s predictable response to conflict involving his daughter.

Another message three days before the final dinner:

Corinne:

If it ends, it needs to end there. Too many private breakups become he-said-she-said.

Graham:

Witnesses help. So does restraint on your side.

Miriam looked at Thayer.

“That line matters.”

He nodded.

Graham was advising Corinne not to become visibly aggressive.

Yet the coatroom abuse was aggressive.

Why risk appearing cruel?

Unless she expected the crucial witnesses to see only what happened after Poppy was released.

Corinne had told guests Poppy was asleep.

Most did not know the child was in the coatroom.

They saw Thayer discover her.

Then saw Thayer strike his wife.

From outside the hallway, the narrative could become:

Notorious mob-connected businessman violently assaults elegant spouse during domestic argument.

If Poppy’s confinement stayed uncertain or private, Corinne looked far more sympathetic.

Thayer looked at Miriam.

“She needed the girl invisible until I reacted.”

Miriam did not confirm it.

“Maybe.”

That word annoyed him.

He was learning to tolerate it.

Then the crisis firm produced one more calendar entry.

Corinne had asked Graham to remain available from 8:00 p.m. onward on the night of the dinner.

Thayer had been expected home around 8:40.

He arrived at 7:55.

Unexpectedly early.

Five minutes before Graham’s scheduled availability window.

Whatever Corinne planned, Thayer had walked in as the machinery was already being positioned.
