Chapter 9

The missing blue folder was recovered from Graham Pike’s office under court-supervised discovery.

Graham claimed Corinne gave it to him for “reputational risk assessment.”

He had scanned parts of it.

Most documents were authentic.

Old.

Embarrassing.

Potentially damaging.

One was a twenty-year-old payment ledger involving Thayer’s father and a contractor later convicted of bribery.

Another documented a confidential settlement after a nightclub security incident.

A third showed Elise warning that one legitimate Knox company had been used too casually by relatives whose activities should never have been allowed near corporate accounts.

Serious.

Not proof Thayer currently ran a criminal enterprise through those companies.

But enough to generate headlines.

Then investigators found Corinne’s working folder.

Draft settlement demand.

Fourteen million.

Property transfer.

Nondisparagement.

Confidentiality.

A line in the margin:

If physical incident documented, increase leverage before release.

Thayer stared.

Miriam continued turning pages.

A draft press statement:

After a frightening domestic confrontation witnessed by family members, Corinne Knox has left the marital home and retained counsel.

Date created:

Four days before the dinner.

Thayer’s expected return time appeared on another page.

8:40 p.m.

Below it:

Guests remain through approximately 9:30.

Then:

Poppy usually removed by 8:15.

Thayer looked up sharply.

Miriam’s face was hard now too.

Corinne had incorporated his daughter’s location into the exit plan.

Still, the exact mechanism remained unclear.

Then a recovered voice memo surfaced.

Corinne speaking to Graham.

“I don’t need him arrested. I need him afraid of what happens if this becomes public.”

Graham answered:

“Then you need a clean story.”

Corinne:

“He’s never clean where Poppy is concerned.”

Graham:

“Meaning?”

Corinne:

“He stops thinking.”

The recording ended.

There was enough to understand leverage.

Not yet enough to prove Corinne deliberately abused Poppy for the purpose of producing the slap.

Then Nora remembered something.

Three hours before the final dinner, Corinne had ordered staff to move a decorative bench out of the west hallway.

“Why?” Miriam asked.

“She said it cluttered guest photographs.”

The bench had partially blocked the view from the dining room toward the coatroom corridor.

Removing it created a clear sightline.

Guests could not see inside the coatroom.

But they could see Thayer confronting Corinne afterward.

The final clue was architectural.

Corinne had prepared the room itself.

The Part 10 answer was now unavoidable.
