Chapter 1 - The Guard Dog in the Study

The grand private study of the Moretti estate was locked in a suffocating, terrifying silence, broken only by the low, lethal rumble of a beast on the edge of violence.

In the center of the room, resting back in a plush leather armchair, sat thirty-eight-year-old Adrian Moretti. The feared mafia boss was dangerously still, his bearded face unusually pale, his dark suit and dark shirt crisp beneath his tilted black hat. He was completely unconscious, his head resting heavily against the leather.

Standing directly in front of his fallen master was Titan—a massive, muscular black-and-tan guard dog wearing a heavy spiked collar. Titan’s lips were pulled back over razor-sharp fangs, his dark eyes glowing with wild, protective fury. A continuous, terrifying growl vibrated through his chest, shaking the heavy air of the wood-paneled room.

Behind the desk stood four hard-faced bodyguards in dark suits and ties, their hands hovering nervously near their shoulder holsters. At the front of the group was Dante Russo, Adrian’s thirty-five-year-old chief lieutenant. Dante’s fair skin was flushed with sweat as he held his hands up in a desperate plea for order.

"Nobody move!" Dante Russo barked in an urgent, hushed warning. "That dog will rip apart anyone who gets near Mr. Moretti!"

Beside Dante stood Dr. Reynolds, holding a black medical bag, his face white with helpless terror as Titan lunged forward two inches, letting out a deafening bark that echoed off the high ceilings.

The heavy oak double doors of the study stood slightly ajar. From the doorway, twenty-eight-year-old Elena Castillo gasped in terror. Dressed in her simple black-and-white maid uniform with a clean white apron and a maid headband, her dark hair pulled back neatly, her hands flew to her mouth in utter panic.

She wasn't looking at the unconscious mafia boss. She was looking at her five-year-old daughter, Sophia.

Sophia had slipped past the line of armed guards like a phantom. Dressed in a pretty pink floral puff-sleeve dress adorned with delicate pink bows, her fair, rosy cheeks were soft under the chandelier light. She held a plush brown teddy bear tightly against her chest with her left arm.

"Sophia, no! Come back!" Elena Castillo gasped, her voice cracking with pure, unadulterated terror as she tried to reach for her child.

It was too late. Sophia didn't stop. She took four small, peaceful steps across the Persian rug, walking straight toward the ferocious guard dog.

Dante Russo froze, his eyes widening in horror. "Get the kid back!" he whispered frantically, but no guard dared to move toward Titan.

Sophia stopped two feet from the towering animal. She didn't flinch at the glint of his spiked collar or his lethal fangs. She slowly extended her small, fair right hand toward the massive dog's head.

"It's okay, big boy..." Sophia Castillo murmured in a sweet, gentle voice, her wide brown eyes filled with total innocence. "...you're just scared for him."

The massive guard dog instantly stopped growling. His ears softened, his tail gave a tiny, hesitant wag, and he lowered his massive head, gently pressing his snout into the five-year-old girl's palm as she softly stroked his ears.

The room went dead silent. Dante Russo, Dr. Reynolds, and the bodyguards stared in absolute, stunned shock.

Sophia turned her head toward Dr. Reynolds and the guards, continuing to gently stroke Titan's calm head with her small hand.

"He says you can help his daddy now," Sophia Castillo said in an innocent, clear voice.

Dr. Reynolds didn't waste a second. He and Elena rushed forward to assist Adrian, while Titan quietly sat down beside Sophia's pink dress, resting his massive head against her knee like an invincible, royal protector.

As Dr. Reynolds pressed a stethoscope against Adrian's chest, he looked up at Dante with a grave expression. "He didn't suffer a stroke, Dante. He's been poisoned."
