Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Guard

By six o'clock that evening, the golden rays of the setting sun bathed the grand private study of Moretti Manor in warmth and light.

The dark memories of the poison and the betrayal had been swept away, replaced by an atmosphere of absolute safety, authority, and peace.

Adrian Moretti sat behind his broad mahogany desk. He wore a fresh dark suit, his black hat set on the desk beside his luxury watch. His blue-gray eyes were clear, steady, and filled with undeniable pride.

Standing beside him, dressed in an elegant dark blue silk dress provided by the estate's private stylist, was Elena Castillo. Her fair rosy skin was radiant, her dark hair styled softly over her shoulders, her presence commanding, beautiful, and regal.

And sitting right in the center of Adrian's massive oak desk, swinging her small white shoes playfully, was five-year-old Sophia. She wore a brand-new pink floral puff-sleeve dress with big pink bows, holding her plush brown teddy bear, happily feeding Titan a piece of dried meat while the massive guard dog rested his head gently on her lap.

Adrian reached into his desk drawer, pulling out a thick, leather-bound document stamped with the official seal of the Supreme Court of New York. He set it flat on the desk before Elena.

"These are the legal guardianship documents, Elena," Adrian said softly, his deep voice carrying profound warmth. "You and I are now co-guardians of the Moretti trust until Sophia turns twenty-one. You will never take orders as a servant in this house again. You are family."

Elena looked down at the documents, tears of deep, overwhelming gratitude brimming in her dark eyes. She looked at the man who had fought through poison and bullets to restore her daughter's birthright.

"Thank you, Adrian," Elena whispered softly, using his first name for the first time. "For giving us a real home."

Sophia set her teddy bear down on the desk, looking at Adrian with her bright brown eyes.

"Uncle Adrian?" she asked softly.

Adrian leaned forward, his rugged, bearded face softening completely. "Yes, little one?"

"Can Titan sleep in my room tonight?"

Adrian let out a deep, genuine laugh—a warm, booming sound that filled the study—and reached out his broad hand to gently stroke her soft hair. "Titan belongs to you now, Sophia. He goes wherever you go."

Titan let out a soft, happy huff, thumping his heavy tail against the desk leg.

Suddenly, the private satellite phone sitting on Adrian's desk began to chime with a sharp, encrypted ringtone from an untraceable server in Rome.

Adrian picked up the device, pressing the receiver to his ear.

A smooth, heavily accented European voice spoke through the speaker:

"Don Moretti... congratulations on securing New York and crowning Marcus's daughter. But Lord Valenti and the High Council in Rome do not recognize a five-year-old child's claim to the European terminals... and an international fleet is being prepared."

Adrian’s dark blue-gray eyes narrowed into razor-sharp focus. He did not flinch. He did not show fear. He slowly looked over at Elena and little Sophia, his broad posture returning to that of an invincible, unyielding warlord ready to guard his family into eternity.

"Tell Lord Valenti," Adrian said quietly, his voice sharp as steel, "that if Rome wants to touch my family... they had better send an army."

He disconnected the call, set the phone down, and wrapped his broad arm around Elena's waist as the golden evening sun bathed the grand study in warmth, safety, and triumphant light.
