Chapter 3 - The Awakening of the King

The atmosphere inside the study dropped into a chilling stillness.
Adrian slowly leaned forward in his leather armchair, his muscular frame tense, his blue-gray eyes burning with an intense, lethal clarity as he stared at the silver chain resting against Sophia's pink dress.
"Elena," Adrian commanded, his gravelly voice echoing off the mahogany walls. "Step forward."
Elena stepped up beside her daughter, her dark hair neat under her maid headband, her fingers digging nervously into her white apron. "Yes, Mr. Moretti?"
"Where did she get that locket?" Adrian asked, his voice low and dangerous.
Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. "It's... it's just a family trinket, sir. My mother gave it to me before she passed away."
"Don't lie to me, Elena," Adrian growled softly, placing his broad hands flat on his desk. "That locket was custom-forged in Milan thirty years ago. There are only two in existence. One is in my private safe. The other belonged to my late brother, Marcus."
Dante Russo, standing near the doorway, stiffened instantly, his hand drifting closer to his jacket lapel.
Sophia reached up with her small hand, popping the delicate silver latch of the locket open. She held the open locket up toward Adrian with a sweet, innocent smile.
"Look, Mr. Adrian," Sophia said softly. "It's the man with the big dog."
Inside the tiny silver frame was a photograph of a young, smiling Marcus Moretti—standing right beside a massive, younger Titan on the estate lawn.
Adrian’s breath hitched in his chest. A wave of profound, agonizing emotion washed across his rugged, bearded face.
He looked from the photograph to Sophia's fair, rosy cheeks, then to her bright brown eyes—the exact shape and color of his late brother's eyes.
Titan let out a soft, happy huff, resting his heavy head against Sophia's pink floral skirt.
"Titan didn't let her touch him because she was gentle, Dante," Adrian whispered, his voice shaking with a rare, raw realization. "Titan let her touch him because she carries Marcus's blood."
Dante’s eyes widened in utter shock. "Boss... are you saying...?"
"She isn't just a maid's daughter," Adrian said, standing up smoothly from his armchair despite his physical weakness. He walked around the desk, dropping to one knee before five-year-old Sophia. "She is my niece."
Elena covered her face with her hands, tears spilling over her fair skin as five years of hidden pain broke free. "I was terrified to tell you, Mr. Moretti... Marcus died three days before she was born. I knew your enemies in Rome would hunt her down if they found out Marcus had an heir!"
Adrian reached out his broad, powerful hand, gently placing his palm over Sophia's small shoulder. His piercing blue-gray eyes filled with absolute, unyielding protection.
"Nobody touches my brother's child," Adrian promised softly.

Suddenly, the heavy crystal chandelier overhead flickered violently and died, plunging the study into pitch-black darkness as the estate's main power grid was severed from the outside.
High-pitched perimeter alarms began to blare across the grounds.
