Chapter 12 - Sofia’s Warning

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Carmine read Sofia’s email alone.
Then again.
He heard her voice in every sentence.
Sofia had never been dramatic.
If something bothered her, she said it once.
Clearly.
That was enough.
Except this time Carmine never heard her.
He sat in their old bedroom long after midnight.
Leo slept down the hall.
For eighteen months, Carmine had blamed grief for every distance he felt from his son.
He worked because work was easier than an empty chair at breakfast.
He trusted Helena because she said:
“I’ll manage the house. You focus on surviving.”
At the time, it sounded like love.
Now it sounded like opportunity.
The next morning, Carmine brought Sofia’s email to investigators.
No exaggeration.
No claims Helena caused Sofia’s illness.
She did not.
Sofia died from a documented medical condition.
Carmine would not turn grief into fantasy.
The betrayal was bad enough as it was.
Helena had seen the warning.
Hidden it.
Then gradually acquired more household authority after Sofia died.
She dismissed employees who resisted her.
Replaced vendors.
Centralized incident reporting.
Created Belmont.
Started collecting “damage debts.”
Then aimed at Leo’s trust.
It was methodical.
The family board reconvened.
This time, several staff members testified.
Maria, the housekeeper.
Thomas, the groundskeeper.
Kevin, a driver.
Teresa.
Frank.
Each told nearly the same story.
Helena humiliated people privately.
Threatened wages.
Created false debts.
Made them believe Carmine approved.
That shocked him most.
“She said Mr. Bellucci wanted accountability,” Maria explained.
Thomas added—
“She said you didn’t want complaints brought to you.”
Kevin nodded.
“She said you hated excuses.”
Carmine sat silent.
Helena had used his reputation.
His seriousness.
His absence.
She turned them into tools.
Afterward, Carmine gathered every household employee.
No grand speech.
He stood in the service dining room.
“I owe you an apology.”
Several people looked uncomfortable.
Carmine continued.
“Helena used my name to make you afraid to speak.”
He paused.
“I gave her enough authority to do that.”
Nobody interrupted.
“From today forward, no wage deduction, disciplinary decision, or damage claim happens without independent review.”
He looked around.
“And no child works off a debt.”
That should never have needed saying.
Yet it did.
Then Frank approached.
“We found another backup.”
“What?”
“A camera from the west hallway.”
The footage was dated two months earlier.
It showed Helena leading Leo toward a storage room.
Leo was crying.
Then Helena crouched and said something.
No audio.
But later, investigators enhanced another nearby microphone.
Her words were clear:
“If you tell Daddy, I’ll make sure he stops coming home.”
Carmine’s face hardened.
Then Leo’s small voice—
“Why?”
Helena answered:
“Because bad boys make fathers leave.”
Carmine had to turn away.

👉 Helena had not only forced Leo to work—she had spent months teaching a grieving three-year-old that every punishment was proof his father might abandon him.
