Chapter 15 - The Bentley Leaves

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The silver Bentley remained in the garage for weeks.
Carmine hated it.
Leo avoided that side of the building completely.
One afternoon, Carmine found him standing at the garage doorway.
Not entering.
Just staring.
Carmine approached.
“You want to go somewhere else?”
Leo shook his head.
“Car there?”
“Yes.”
“Helena car?”
Carmine nodded.
Leo took one step backward.
That decided it.
Carmine called the company handling seized and disputed assets.
The Bentley’s ownership was complicated because suspicious funds had helped purchase it.
He did not simply take it.
He worked through counsel.
Eventually, the car was surrendered as part of financial restitution proceedings.
On the day it left, Leo watched from an upstairs window.
A transporter loaded it.
He asked—
“Where car go?”
“Away.”
“Come back?”
“No.”
Leo nodded.
Then returned to his toys.
Carmine wished healing were always that simple.
It wasn’t.
The garage still scared him.
Buckets scared him.
Once a housekeeper knocked over soapy water and Leo screamed.
Dr. Harris taught Carmine not to rush the fear.
Name it.
Stay.
Let the child control distance.
Weeks later, Leo entered the garage holding Carmine’s hand.
Frank was there.
He crouched.
“Hey, buddy.”
Leo hid behind Carmine.
Frank didn’t approach.
They stayed five minutes.
Next visit, ten.
Eventually, Leo noticed his old toy truck on a shelf.
The same one Helena had used to lure him inside.
He stared.
Carmine asked—
“Want it?”
Leo shook his head.
“Throw?”
“Sure.”
Then Leo changed his mind.
“No.”
He picked it up.
“Mine.”
Carmine smiled.
“Yes.”
That mattered.
Helena had used the toy as bait.
Leo took it back as a toy.
Nothing more.
Financial restitution also moved forward.
Employees received reimbursement for improper wage deductions.
Additional compensation was established for those wrongly disciplined or terminated.
Teresa was offered her old position.
She declined.
“I love Leo.”
She smiled.
“But I want a job where nobody can fire me for protecting him.”
Carmine respected that.
He gave her a strong reference.
No pressure.
Maria stayed.
Frank stayed.
Several managers did not.
Mansion Service Management was dissolved entirely.
Its functions were split between independent departments with separate oversight.
No single person would again control staffing, discipline, repairs, vendors, and incident claims.
Jonathan joked—
“You’ve made the mansion bureaucratic.”
Carmine replied—
“Good.”
Then the restitution accountant called.
They had identified a hidden brokerage account belonging to Helena.
$1.2 million.
Enough to repay much of what employees and the family companies lost.
But inside the account records was a recurring transfer.
$5,000 monthly.
Recipient:
L.B. EDUCATION FUND.
Carmine stared.
“Leo?”
Jonathan checked.
No.
Another L.B.
Lucia Bellucci.
Helena’s daughter.
Carmine had not spoken Lucia’s name in years.
Because everyone believed she died as an infant.
