Chapter 11 - safehouse shadows

The safehouse was a converted brick warehouse in an abandoned industrial zone along the Jersey City canal. The interior was spartan but fortified—reinforced steel doors, blackout curtains, and heavy concrete pillars.
Clara had finally fallen asleep on an old leather sofa, wrapped in a warm wool blanket, clutching the silver locket tightly in her small fist.
Across the room, beside a cold iron stove, Elena sat with a cup of black coffee between her trembling hands. Her fair skin was pale, dark circles bruising the space beneath her striking blue eyes.
Dominic stood by the reinforced window, cleaning the cut on his forearm with an alcohol pad. He didn't flinch as the antiseptic stung the open flesh.
"Marcus was twenty-two when we told everyone he died," Dominic said quietly, breaking the heavy silence. "His car was found in Lake Como. The police pulled a body from the water."
"It was a vagrant," Elena whispered, staring into her coffee. "Marcus set it up. He was stealing from the family accounts even back then. When you took over as Don, he knew you would audit the Sicilian ledgers. He staged his death to escape your judgment."
Dominic turned around, his dark eyes boring into her. "And when did you find out he was alive?"
Elena looked up, her chin trembling slightly. "Three years ago. Julian came to my house in Zurich. He told me Marcus had formed a syndicate with offshore cartels. He said Marcus was planning to systematically eliminate anyone who carried the Valerio name—including Clara."
"So you made a deal with the devil," Dominic said coldly.
"I made a deal with Julian to keep my daughter alive!" Elena’s voice cracked with raw, desperate motherly instinct. "You weren't there, Dominic! You were gone! Everyone said you were vaporized in Corfu! Who was going to protect her? Your capos? They were turning on each other like starving wolves!"
Dominic took two slow steps toward her, his shadow towering over the table.
"I survived Corfu because the thought of you kept me breathing," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a harsh, emotional whisper. "I crawled out of the Mediterranean with third-degree burns and three broken ribs. I spent four years in an underground recovery cell in Marseilles, rebuilding my network brick by brick, just to make sure this city was safe before I brought you home."
Elena pressed her hands against her face, breaking into silent, shuddering sobs. The hard, icy armor she had worn on the ship completely disintegrated.
"I didn't know, Dominic... God forgive me, I didn't know."
Dominic looked at her for a long moment, the anger in his chest slowly giving way to something far heavier—grief.
Before he could speak, the warehouse door groaned as Frank walked in, holding a high-security satellite terminal.
"Boss," Frank said, his face grim. "Julian Cross just cracked in the wine cellar."
"What did he say?"
"Julian didn't forge Carter Hayes's death certificate," Frank said, handing Dominic a printed wire-transfer receipt. "Marcus transferred fifty million dollars into Julian's offshore account yesterday afternoon. Marcus is in the city right now. And he just called an emergency summit of the Five Families for nine o'clock this morning at the Plaza."
Dominic checked his watch. It was five in the morning.
"What's on the agenda for the summit?" Dominic asked.
Frank swallowed hard. "Marcus is presenting legal proof of your 'treason' to the commission. He's claiming you went rogue, killed Carter Hayes, and tried to sell the port to Boston. He’s asking the Commission for full authorization to wipe the Valerio bloodline off the board."
Dominic handed the satellite terminal back to Frank. A terrifying, predatory calm settled over his rugged features.

"Tell the boys to polish their shoes," Dominic said. "We're going to a summit."
