Chapter 12 - the king's ledger

By seven in the morning, the rain had stopped, replaced by a cold, crisp autumn sunlight that illuminated Manhattan’s concrete canyons in sharp, brilliant clarity.
Dominic, Frank, and four of their most loyal old-guard soldiers stood inside a secure subterranean vault beneath the Manhattan Municipal Archives.
Thomas Vance, the St. Regis manager, unlocked a heavy steel deposit box embedded in the floor.
"This hasn't been opened since your father passed away thirty years ago, Mr. Valerio," Thomas said reverently.
Inside the box lay a leather-bound book with brass corners—the original Valerio Commission Charter. Written by Dominic’s grandfather and co-signed by the founding fathers of the city’s historic crime families, the document held absolute legal and underworld supremacy.
Under the Charter's seventh article, any challenge to a sitting Don required direct physical combat or unanimous tribunal consent. But more importantly, the Charter contained the secret bank routing codes for the Commission’s joint sovereign reserve—a fund of over four billion dollars that guaranteed peace between the families.
Dominic opened the ledger.
Tucked inside the back cover was an envelope addressed in his father’s handwriting:
*To Dominic. If Marcus ever returns, read this.*
Dominic’s fingers hovered over the yellowed paper. He broke the wax seal and unfolded the letter.
His eyes scanned his father’s steady handwriting:
*Dominic, my son. If you are reading this, the worst has come to pass. Marcus was never your biological brother. He was the son of Salvatore Moretti, taken into our home as an infant after the 1978 turf war as part of a blood truce. Salvatore made me swear never to tell the boy his true lineage. But the Moretti blood was always venomous. Marcus carries the greed of his real father. He will try to claim the Valerio crown, but he has no right to it. Protect our family, Dominic. Shed no tears for a wolf raised among sheep.*
Dominic stared at the page, the pieces of the puzzle snapping together with terrifying precision.
Marcus had never been a Valerio. That was why he had forged the alliance with the Boston Morettis. That was why he had tried to slaughter Dominic in Corfu and erase Clara from existence. He wasn't just stealing an empire—he was completing an ancient blood vendetta.
"Frank," Dominic said, his voice like grinding tectonic plates.
"Yes, Boss?"
"Call the family physician. Have Dr. Lang bring a secure mobile medical team to the safehouse to watch over Elena and Clara."
Frank nodded instantly. "Right away."
Dominic closed the heavy ledger and tucked his father's letter into his suit pocket. He walked out of the vault toward the elevators, adjusting the cuffs of his clean charcoal suit.
"Thomas," Dominic called over his shoulder.
"Sir?"
"Call the Plaza. Tell the banquet manager to prepare the Grand Ballroom for nine o'clock."
"Who should I say is reserving the room, Mr. Valerio?"
Dominic stepped into the elevator, his dark eyes glowing with lethal intent.
