Chapter 4 - the hammer falls

Dominic didn't wait for sunrise.
Thirty minutes later, three black Cadillac Escalades tore through the wrought-iron gates of the Cross family estate in the exclusive enclave of Kings Point. The private security guards at the gatehouse didn't even have time to reach for their radios before Frank and four heavily built men disarmed them, zip-tying their wrists and cutting the estate's phone lines.
Dominic stepped out of the lead vehicle. The night air was crisp and chilly.
He walked up the sweeping limestone staircase of the multi-million-dollar modern mansion and kicked the double front doors off their hinges with a single, thunderous blow.
The heavy glass and mahogany splintered inward.
Inside the cavernous, white-marble foyer, Vivienne was standing near the grand spiral staircase, clutching a silk robe around her waist, a half-packed leather suitcase sitting beside her.
Julian Cross stood beside her, clad in an expensive cashmere sweater, clutching a silver briefcase. Julian was forty-five, lean, with slicked-back brown hair and a manic, cornered expression in his pale blue eyes.
"Valerio!" Julian yelled, instantly reaching for a Glock tucked into his waistband.
Dominic didn't draw a weapon. He closed the twenty-foot distance in three lightning strides.
Before Julian could raise the barrel, Dominic’s left hand shot out like an iron vice, clamping around Julian’s wrist and twisting it downward. The bone snapped with a sickening pop.
Julian shrieked in agony as the gun clattered onto the polished marble. Dominic didn't stop—he grabbed Julian by the front of his cashmere sweater, lifted him clean off his feet, and slammed him hard against the mirrored wall behind the foyer. The glass webbed in all directions.
"Dominic, stop! Please!" Vivienne screamed, dropping to her knees. "Don't kill him!"
Dominic leaned his rugged face inches from Julian’s pale, sweat-streaked forehead. "Where is Clara?"
Julian gasped for breath, his face turning purple under Dominic’s grip. "I don't... I don't have her! I swear to God, Dominic!"
"You called me thirty minutes ago," Dominic growled, tightening his fingers around Julian’s windpipe. "You said you had my blood."
"It was a bluff! A bluff to buy time!" Julian wheezed, spit flying from his lips. "Carter Hayes has her! Carter took her two days ago!"
"Why would Carter take her?" Dominic asked coldly.
"Because Carter found out you were alive!" Julian cried, panic completely shattering his composure. "Carter realized if you came back, you'd find out what we did with the shipping manifests! He took Clara as his own shield against you!"
Dominic paused, searching Julian’s terrified eyes. The man was a coward, and cowards didn't lie well when their ribs were cracking.
"What shipping manifests?" Dominic asked.
Vivienne looked up from the floor, trembling. "The ports, Dominic. Julian didn't take your hotels for the real estate. He needed the Valerio commercial docks in New Jersey. That's where the real money is coming from."
"Coming from who?" Dominic demanded.
Julian gasped, trying to pull Dominic’s hand away. "A syndicate out of Boston. The Moretti crew. They paid Carter fifty million dollars to forge your signature and clear the customs inspection routes. Carter didn't just betray you, Dominic... he sold your entire legacy to your oldest enemies."
Dominic stared at Julian for three long seconds. Then, without a word, he released his grip. Julian dropped to the marble floor like a sack of wet flour, coughing and clutching his broken wrist.
Dominic turned toward Frank, who stood in the shattered doorway with his weapon drawn.
"Frank," Dominic ordered calmly. "Take Julian and Vivienne to the basement vault at the St. Regis. Lock them in the wine cellar until I say otherwise."
"You got it, boss," Frank nodded, signaling two men forward.
Dominic picked up the silver briefcase Julian had dropped. He popped the latches.
Inside were stacks of bearer bonds, three passports under fake identities, and a handwritten ledger sheet with an address scrawled in black ink:
*St. Jude’s Children's Shelter, Newark, New Jersey. Room 4B.*

Dominic snapped the case shut. "Let's move."
