Chapter 8 - the ghost speaks

"Put the gun down, Elena," Dominic said, his voice dropping into that terrifying, gravelly calm. He didn't raise his hands. He took one step into the cabin.
"Stay right there!" Elena snapped, her finger tightening on the trigger.
Clara looked up between them, her small hazel eyes darting from the gun to the towering man standing in the doorway. "Mommy... who is that?"
"Don't look at him, Clara," Elena whispered sharply, keeping her weapon locked on Dominic’s chest.
Dominic looked down at the little girl, then back at the woman he had mourned for nearly a decade. "You let me believe you died in that hospital. You let me bury an empty grave."
Elena let out a sharp, bitter laugh that sounded nothing like the sweet woman he remembered from ten years ago. "I had to die, Dominic! If I didn't die, your enemies would have slaughtered this child in her crib! Look at what your life is! Blood, vendettas, bodies in hotel ballrooms!"
"I built an empire to protect you!" Dominic growled, his jaw tightening.
"You built a prison!" Elena shouted, her fair cheeks flushing red with long-suppressed rage. "You were at war in Sicily when I went into labor! You were executing rival captains while Clara was taking her first breaths! Julian offered me an out. He gave me new identities, a quiet life in Switzerland, and safety for our daughter."
"Julian Cross sold your daughter's location to the highest bidder the second I resurfaced," Dominic said coldly. "He used her to extort Carter Hayes. He was going to put Clara on a flight to Geneva as a hostage."
Elena blinked, a sudden flicker of doubt crossing her sharp features. "No. Julian swore to me that this ship was taking us to South America, far away from your reach."
"Julian is locked in the wine cellar of the St. Regis with a broken wrist," Dominic said, taking another measured step forward. "And the men who brought you here don't answer to Julian. They answer to Victor Cole."
At the mention of Victor’s name, Elena’s posture stiffened.
Before she could respond, a slow, mocking round of applause echoed from the shadows of the upper bridge catwalk outside the cabin window.
"Very perceptive, Boss. Just as sharp as you were in Corfu."
A tall, broad-shouldered man in a black tactical jacket stepped through the side hatch. On the right side of his neck, the tattoo of the black serpent wrapping around an anchor was unmistakable.
Victor Cole smiled, holding a suppressed automatic pistol loosely in his right hand.
Behind him stood two armed mercenaries with night-vision optics mounted to their helmets.
Elena spun around in shock, her gun wavering between Dominic and Victor. "Victor? What are you doing here? You were supposed to be on the bridge securing our departure!"
Victor didn't look at her. His cold eyes remained locked on Dominic.
"Mrs. Valerio was always so naive," Victor sneered softly. "She actually thought Julian Cross was smart enough to plan all of this."
"Who gave the order to blow up my yacht in Greece, Victor?" Dominic asked, his tone flat, as if asking about the weather.
Victor’s smile faded into pure arrogance. "The same person who paid me twenty million dollars to ensure you never made it home to your daughter."
May you like
Victor raised his suppressed weapon, aiming straight for Dominic’s forehead.
