Chapter 11

Damien confronted Celestine through lawyers.

Not privately.

Not with armed men.

Not in the mansion.

The meeting happened in Arthur’s downtown office.

Celestine arrived in a navy suit with two attorneys.

Damien sat across from her with Arthur and independent counsel.

Agnes chose not to attend.

Her choice.

No one challenged it.

Arthur placed the forged consent, the financing records, Vincent’s settlement, and the recovered communications on the table.

Celestine looked through them.

Her expression barely changed.

Finally:

“Vincent wanted that development.”

“He’s dead.”

“So is Patrick.”

“My mother isn’t.”

Celestine leaned back.

“That has always been the problem.”

Damien stared at her.

She continued.

“Do you know what that estate is worth?”

“Yes.”

“No. You know what it is worth as a monument to your father.”

Her voice sharpened.

“I know what it is worth as land.”

“That distinction belongs to the owner.”

Celestine laughed.

“Agnes needs seventy-three acres?”

“It does not matter what she needs.”

“It matters to every company around her.”

“She owns it.”

Celestine looked toward the documents.

“She inherited money. Patrick built the Rourke name.”

Damien’s expression hardened.

“And apparently that convinced everyone her property stopped being hers.”

Arthur asked directly:

“Did you provide the copied Agnes signature?”

Celestine’s attorney interrupted.

She refused to answer.

“Did you arrange the capacity assessment?”

Again, counsel intervened.

Damien watched her.

Then said:

“You know what makes this simple?”

Celestine looked at him.

“You spent fifteen years waiting for an old woman to become easier to control.”

Her composure finally cracked.

“You think she was innocent? She destroyed Vincent.”

“No.”

Damien remained calm.

“She stopped Vincent from using something that did not belong to him.”

Celestine stood.

“So now you destroy your own family for her?”

Damien looked toward the old deed.

“No.”

“I’m finally learning the difference between family and ownership.”

The meeting ended.

Celestine left without another word.

And for the first time, she could no longer depend on Damien handling the matter somewhere no outsider could see.
