Chapter 13

The independent audit found problems that had nothing to do with Celestine.
Damien had promised it would continue anyway.
So it did.
Rourke Hospitality had paid personal travel for several relatives.
A property company had undocumented leases with family-connected businesses.
Foundation money had funded events that were more social than charitable.
Consulting contracts existed mainly because a cousin needed income.
Nothing destroyed the legitimate businesses.
Enough was wrong to make every family dinner unpleasant for months.
Three relatives lost executive roles.
One foundation director resigned.
Taxes and penalties were paid.
Damien personally reimbursed expenses approved under policies he had inherited and never questioned.
Several relatives accused him of destroying Patrick’s legacy.
Damien corrected them.
“Patrick built businesses.”
His uncle glared.
“And?”
“He also built habits.”
The outside directors remained.
Written conflicts policies replaced handshake approvals.
Family members stopped receiving automatic positions.
Property ownership was mapped clearly.
The trust documents were modernized.
No more secret assumptions hidden inside forty-year-old paperwork.
Agnes watched from her sitting room.
One afternoon Damien brought her the completed property map.
She adjusted her glasses.
“It’s ugly.”
“It’s accurate.”
“Your father would hate it.”
“That’s becoming useful information.”
She smiled.
Then Damien’s expression changed.
“You should’ve told me about Vincent.”
“I know.”
“You should’ve changed the trust after he died.”
“I know.”
“You should’ve told me the estate was yours.”
Agnes looked at him.
“Would you have treated me differently?”
“No.”
“Then ownership was not our real problem.”
“What was?”
She folded the map.
“You assumed being my son meant you knew everything important about my life.”
Damien had no answer.
She was right.
Celestine had exploited Damien’s absence.
But Agnes had also lived inside his blind spot.

He protected his mother.
He rarely listened to her as an independent adult with assets, decisions, and secrets of her own.
