Chapter 11 - Vesper’s counteroffensive

Vesper denied misconduct.

Not the payments.

The meaning.

Her statement through counsel:

She provided legitimate consulting services to Greencrest and North Vale.

The compensation was market-based.

Her roles at Marlowe were advisory, not final procurement authority.

Conflict disclosures were completed in good faith based on her understanding that “financial interest” meant ownership or profit-sharing directly in the vendor.

Her foundation travel was donor stewardship.

Her recommendations benefited Marlowe.

Some of that could be true.

Then attack on Elara.

Vesper alleged Elara had:

Personal hostility.

Professional jealousy.

Accessed records beyond authority.

Misunderstood consulting relationships.

Attempted to isolate Isolde from the Marlowe family.

She filed a civil action seeking:

Protective order over confidential records.

Declaration concerning privilege.

Damages for alleged misuse of private financial information.

No claim that Isolde was not legally mine.

Interesting.

The ballroom accusation disappeared from legal papers.

Because Vesper knew it had no basis.

Then criminal child-assault case.

She accepted responsibility for throwing the locket?

No.

She said:

“I removed an heirloom she was mishandling.”

Video disagreed.

For shove:

She claimed Isolde stumbled into cart when Vesper moved her away from broken jewelry.

Again video.

Prosecutor offered misdemeanor plea with probation and no-contact condition.

Vesper refused initially.

She wanted acquittal.

Then the special committee froze her access to:

Vendor selection.

Foundation disbursement approvals.

Corporate event procurement.

Not her personal bank accounts.

Not her property.

No asset seizure.

Then foundation board.

Vesper was chair.

Could Marlowe Holdings remove her?

Not unilaterally.

Foundation bylaws allowed board vote.

Independent trustees placed her on temporary leave pending review.

She sued there too.

Then family pressure.

Three cousins called me.

“You’re letting outsiders dismantle the family.”

“No.”

“You gave auditors Elara’s private notes.”

“She instructed release.”

“Vesper made mistakes. She didn’t steal the company.”

“I didn’t say she did.”

Then:

“Is this because she pushed Isolde?”

“No.”

That was difficult to say.

Emotionally it was partly why I stopped protecting ambiguity.

Legally and corporately, the records stood on their own.

Then Isolde.

She overheard one cousin say:

“This is all because of that kid.”

I ended the visit.

Immediately.

Isolde asked:

“Did I break the company?”

“No.”

“Then why are they mad?”

“Because adults are losing things they thought were theirs.”

“What things?”

“Power.”

She nodded.

May you like

“Like toys.”

Close enough.
